Ehrlich named head soccer coach at WHS

Uwe Ehrlich has been named men’s and women’s soccer coach at Watauga High School.

Watauga National hangs tough in district tourney
The Watauga National 11/12 year old team defeated Lenoir National 3-2 in extra innings at Boone Optimist field in an International Little League Tournament game. It was a low scoring game with stellar pitching for both teams.

Parks and Recrecation team, sport sign ups
Watauga County Parks and Recreation is currently accepting registration for youth soccer.

ASU lands six on squad
PHILADELPHIA — Led by 2008 Walter Payton Award winner Armanti Edwards and ’08 Buck Buchanan Award finalist Mark LeGree, six Appalachian State football players earned 2009 preseason all-America recognition from The Sports Network on Thursday.

CULLOWHEE - Western Carolina’s football team met Thursday as it continued to cope with the sudden loss of Ja’Quayvin Smalls. The junior defensive back collapsed during a voluntary workout session last Wednesday and died at the Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva.

Former ASU guard earns games honors
GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN - Larry Brock, 30, former Appalachain State offensive guard and now the offensive coordinator and line coach at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, won the 2009 Grandfather Mountain Highland Games “Scottish Athlete of the Games” award.

Cowie captures victory in Grandfather Marathon
GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN - Steve Cowie from Greensboro won the Grandfather Mountain Marathon in 2:46.31. Cowie, has raced in the marathon two times before and placed in the top five each time.
