ASU will play in the Bahamas
From staff reports
Appalachian State men's basketball coach Buzz Peterson announced that the returning members from last year's squad will participate in a three-game foreign exhibition tour to the Bahamas in August.
Per NCAA regulations, Appalachian can hold 10 days of practice with the returnees prior to the Aug. 18-22 trip to the Bahamas, in addition to the three exhibition games it will play in the Caribbean nation, including a contest against the Bahamian national squad.
All expenses for the trip are paid for by Basketball Travelers, Inc., which organizes numerous foreign tours for NCAA programs and in-season tournaments each year.
“The opportunity Basketball Travelers has given us is a great one for several reasons,” Peterson said. “It will be great to get on the court for the early practices and to challenge ourselves against tough competition before the season. I also hope the players will enjoy the time before classes start for the semester.”
McMahon earns honor
ASU assistant coach Matt McMahon was ranked 12th among assistant coaches of mid-major programs by CollegeInsider.com. The accolade follows a year after McMahon was voted by his peers on a FoxSports.com poll of 450 coaches around the country.
McMahon enters his 10th season on the Mountaineer bench in 2009-10. He is also the team's recruiting coordinator and oversees the player development for Appalachian's perimeter players.
A former standout for the Black and Gold, McMahon played from 1997-2000 and was a starter for the 1999-2000 NCAA Tournament squad before joining the coaching ranks.
Gonzaga's Leon Rice was ranked number one in the poll, as the Bulldogs have recorded a 236-60 record since his arrival in 1999. Ranking 22nd, Davidson's Jim fox is the only other Southern Conference coach on the list.
