The Watauga Tailwind Track Club, an AAU track and field club, will participate in the Southeast Regional AAU meet July 9-12 at the Hardin Valley Academy in Knoxville, Tenn.

Several local athletes, who qualified for the event in a meet in Charlotte in June, will participate. The regional is a qualifier for the national AAU track and field Junior Olympics.

The Watauga team has about 75 members and is coached by Don Wood, a former assistant of Watauga High’s cross country team.

The team sent several athletes to the state AAU Track and Field meet on June 13. The age groups are divided into the Pee Wee (2003 birth date and later), Primary (2001-03), Bantam (1999-2000), Midget (1997-99), Youth (1995-96), Intermediate (1993-94) and Young (1991-92).

First-place finishers for Watauga included Ian Boyd in the 110-meter hurdles in the young division for the boys. Maddy Phillips was first in the shot put in the primary division for the girls. Taylor Phillips also finished in first place in the shot put in the sub-bantam division, and Madi Casey was first in the high jump in the sub-youth.

Rebecca Hayes took first place in the triple jump and second place in the high jump in the sub youth division and Alison Seramur was first in the discus and second in the triple jump in the sub youth. Casey was also second in the discus throw.
