Ann Frantzen
Mrs. Ann Frantzen, 80, of Greenway Courts, Blowing Rock, died Monday evening, June 30, 2009, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
She was born April 14, 1929 in Amsterdam, Holland.
Mrs. Frantzen was a homemaker.
Surviving are two sons, Edward L. Frantzen and wife, Pamela, of Stratford, Conn., and Ben Frantzen and wife, Sharon, of Blowing Rock; one sister, Ollie Hetroys of Wormer, Holland; and one brother, Pete van Staveren of South Africa.
Services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Norman Craig Lisk, Sr.
Mr. Norman Craig Lisk, Sr., 93, of 902 West Fifth Street, Siler City, N.C., died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.
He was born Oct. 5, 1915, at Richfield, N.C., the son of Walter Lee and Mary Jane Parker Lisk.
Mr. Lisk was a native of Rowan County, a graduate of Pfeifer College and retired administrator of 31 years at Chatham Hospital. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City where he served as a Trustee and on the Administrative Board and the property committee. Mr. Lisk had been awarded honors in the past as citizen of the year, past vice chairman of the Chatham County Board of Education and past President of the NC Hospital Association. He was a member of the Siler City Rotary where he had served as president and secretary. He was also a veteran of World War II in the Army Air Corp.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Hazel Karriker Lisk; two daughters, Jane Lisk Andrews and husband, Robert, of Siler City, N.C., Martha Lisk of Pittsboro, N.C.; and one son, Norman Craig Lisk, Jr. and wife, Colleen, of Blowing Rock, N.C.; granddaughter, Tish Robertson and husband, Jim Robertson, of Blowing Rock, N.C.; and great-grandchildren, Camille and Jake Ward of Blowing Rock, N.C.
The family received friends Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City, N.C. and other times at the family home.
The funeral was held Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park with military rites by the Randolph Honor Guard.

Robert Lee ‘Bob’ Presnell
Mr. Robert Lee "Bob" Presnell, 65, of 103 Virginia Drive, Claudeville, Va., a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem.
He was born April 4, 1944 in Watauga County. Mr. Presnell was a retired employee of Dixie Furniture in Lexington.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy F. Presnell of the home; three sons, David Presnell of Lexington, Danny Presnell and wife, Regina, of Vilas, and Jesse Presnell and wife, Laura, of Mount Airy; two granddaughters, Nichole Presnell and finance, Jason Buckner, of Vilas and Lilly Presnell of Mount Airy; one grandson, Lee Presnell of Lexington; and one sister, Patsy Fletcher of Vilas.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Carson Howard Presnell and Lillie Presnell.
A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Michael C. Ahern
Mr. Michael C. Ahern, 98, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Thursday, June 24, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
He was born Nov. 25, 1910 in Manchester, NH. He was employed by JF McElwain Shoe Company, and in 1961 moved to North Carolina as Vice President of Blue Ridge Shoe Company. Mike retired from this position in 1975, and after his retirement, enjoyed golf, traveling, working on investments, and spending time with his family. In 2001, he moved from Boone to Winston-Salem, N.C. to be closer to his family. He remained active and made many new friends after relocating.
He is survived by sons, Michael E. Ahern of Los Angeles, Calif., William K. Ahern of Goose Creek, S.C., Vincent R. Ahern, of Tampa, Fla.; daughters, Patricia Pecore of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mary Ahern of Clemmons, N.C.; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Louise; sons, James and Joseph; grandson, Michael; and 10 siblings.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 3, 2009, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, N.C. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Jessie Leura Ward Ballew
Mrs. Jessie Leura Ward Ballew, of Winston-Salem, beloved wife of James P. (Jimmy) Ballew, and mother of Laura Ballew Strupe and James Phillip Ballew II, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born May 11, 1934 in Rush Branch in Watauga County, the fourth of the six children of Dewey and Anita Ward.
Mrs. Ballew was educated at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, where she met Jimmy. They were married on Dec. 22, 1956 and moved to Winston-Salem. Her early career was as a school teacher. She then joined Independent Living Services, teaching the blind. Many of her friends are in the Business Enterprise Program under Services for the Blind, where she was last employed. She was a member of Konnoak Baptist Church.
Although she had limited sight, she saw with her heart. She enjoyed keeping her yard blooming with unusual flowers and shrubbery. The Ballew’s Christmas decorations were a joy not only to her as they brightened her home, but to passersby. As a thoughtful neighbor, she shared vegetables in summer and dishes she prepared in winter. She treasured her friends, welcoming them with her distinct laugh. In healthy, happy days, her home rang with the merriment of friends, many of them talented, who joined Jimmy in providing music for the gatherings.
Surviving are her husband Jimmy; a daughter, Laura Strupe and son-in-law, Walter Strupe; two sisters, Marie Presnell (Arnold), Carolyn McGuire; a brother, Hillard Ward (Linda); one sister-in-law, Ernestine Ward; several nieces and nephews; and a special great niece, Natalie Combs, the light of her life. Also special to her was Scrapper, her large black and white cat.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James Phill, who died in 1985; and two brothers, Earl and Frank Ward.
Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. John Bishop, pastor of Konnoak Baptist Church, and Dr. Ray Hamilton, pastor emeritus officiating. Burial followed at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Ward Mountain Cemetery in Sugar Grove.
Jessie and Laura enjoyed volunteering for the Feral Cat Assistance Program and donations may be made to this organization in Jessie’s memory at P.O. Box 29112, Greensboro, N.C. 27429.

Marta Johnson Greene
Marta Winslow Johnson Greene, born Feb. 3, 1936 to the late Bruce and Helena Johnson, went on to be with her Lord Tuesday, June 23, 2009.
She was a faithful member and Sunday School teacher of Highland View Baptist Church of Deep Gap. Marta retired from First Union National Bank, North Wilkesboro, after many years of dedicated service and recently retired from AF Bank of West Jefferson. Co-workers and customers alike will miss her.
Marta supported her late husband in his ministry at many churches. She was happiest in serving the Lord. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will miss the happy times at her home. She leaves a legacy of service to others above self.
Her husband, Reverend John Greene preceded Marta in death on July 23, 1999. Marta is survived by three brothers, Cris Johnson and wife, Beryl, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Dean Johnson and wife, Lillie, of Granite Falls; Michael Johnson and wife, Rose Mary, of Charlotte; and a sister, Judith Swiger and husband, Dave, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Also surviving are her children: Melanie Regina and husband, Larry Brooks, of Vilas; Angela Darlene Greene of Morgantown, WV; Melisa Darda and husband, Ronnie Jessup, of Westfield; Bart Grayson Greene and wife, Linda, of Deep Gap; Marta Susanne and husband, Charles Jordan, of Max Meadows, Va.; and Nan Rene´ and husband, James Lacy, of Hickory. Marta was especially proud of her grandchildren: Jason Brooks and wife, Laura, Justin Brooks and wife, Marta, all of Vilas, Sebron Jessup of Westfield, Deana and husband, Kevin Harrison, of Pilot Mountain, April and husband, Kelvin Locklear, of Florence, S.C., Tasha and husband, Travis Chrisawn, of Grassy Creek, Collin and Devin Riley Brogan of Hickory; and her great-grandchildren: Olivia, Ashley, Nolan, Jordan, Charlie, Kameron, Ezekiel, Kate, Truett, Jacob, and Kara. She looked forward to the blessing of a 12th great-grandchild in November.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to her special friend Dr. Charles Ford of Boone and his staff; Dr. John Davis, Dr. Charles Davant III, Dr. Glen Liesegang and the staff of Blowing Rock Hospital; the staff of ICU Respiratory Unit 6C and Palliative Care of Baptist Hospital. We sincerely thank family and friends for the prayers and love in support of our mother.
Services were conducted by the Rev. Herbert Parunak, the Rev. Dana Williams, and the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with graveside services following at Highland View Baptist Church in Deep Gap.
