in state games

CHARLOTTE — Two rising seniors at Watauga High played in the North Carolina State Games held in Charlotte over the weekend.

Cal Hardee, an All-Northwestern 4-A Conference shortstop at Watauga, batted .455 with a home run and three RBIs for the Region 7 team. He went 5-of-11 from the plate and did not commit an error while playing shortstop for the team, which went 1-3 and finished seventh in the event.
Region 6, which is the Charlotte area, beat Region 3, the Raleigh area, in the championship game 7-5. Region 5 won the bronze medal.
In girls’ soccer, Watauga’s All-NWC goal keeper Katherine Mayhew allowed just one goal in two games in helping the West team won the gold medal.
Mayhew, whose goal keeping helped Watauga reach the playoffs during the 2009 prep season, was part of the West team that beat the East 1-0 in the first round at the state games. The West went on to beat the South 2-1 in the championship game.
