Football 101, Fan Fest dates set
Dates are set for two of Appalachian State University football’s most anticipated summer events — Football 101 and Fan Fest.
Football 101, Appalachian’s annual ladies-only gridiron event, will be held on Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m. in Owens Field House.
Fan Fest, which features fun for the entire family and a chance to see the Mountaineers in action before the season opener at East Carolina, is set for Aug. 22 at 4 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Sinnott added to coaching staff
Appalachian State wrestling coach JohnMark Bentley hired Christian Sinnott as an assistant coach for the upcoming season.
Sinnott comes to Appalachian from Central Michigan, where he was an volunteer assistant coach for the 2008-09 season. He also served as the strength and conditioning coach for wrestling, football, baseball, gymnastics and field hockey in 2008.
“I’m very excited about adding Christian to our staff here at ASU,” Bentley said. “I believe he will be a tremendous asset to our upper weight classes, and his experience as a competitor and coach will help our program.”
Ryan’s Rock-N-Roll run goes this Saturday
There will be a benefit run to help the family of Will Dicus Saturday at the Boone Greenway.
Ryan’s Rock-N-Roll Run, created in honor of Ryan Glenny, begins at 9 a.m. at the Greenway. Registration is $20 and includes a T-shirt.
The run was started last year in honor of Glenny, who like Dicus, also died of Ewing’s Sarcoma, a form of blood cancer that strikes mostly teenaged boys. Glenny, a student at Watauga High School, died 10 days short of his 17th birthday.
The run was held in conjunction with a night at the Watauga Skate Park last year in an effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This year, there will just be the run and all of the proceeds raised will go to help the Dicus family pay any medical bills.
There will be three races during the event. There will be a one-mile race, a 5K race and a five-mile run. Runners can register at ryansrocknroll.com or at the Greenway before the events.
