Frances Scott Joyner Reed
Mrs. Frances Scott Joyner Reed, 85, of Boone, N.C., died surrounded by her family at home, Monday morning, June, 8 2009. 
She was born in Elizabeth City, N.C., Sept. 11, 1923.
Mrs. Reed was valedictorian of the Rock Ridge High School Class of 1939, Rock Ridge, N.C. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics (Foods and Nutrition) from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro) in 1943 and her Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Appalachian State University in 1985. She was awarded a Danforth Fellowship in 1942 and was recognized with a civic award for her volunteer work at New River Mental Health.
She was employed at the U.S. Dept of Agriculture in wartime Washington, D.C., and later managed the kitchen at the Statler Hotel (now the Capitol Hilton). She worked in hospital laboratories in Chapel Hill and in Burlington, and for Appalachian State University's Health Services as a medical and x-ray technician. After her retirement from ASU, she found her calling as a therapist and ended her working career as such at New River Mental Health, where she volunteered her time and talents for several years.
Frances was a mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and a “tough old bird.” She was fun-loving, a great dancer (jitterbug and Charleston). She was a class act, a cut-up, party-thrower, gracious hostess; singer of choral, barbershop, and shape note music. She was a lover of beauty and laughter, limericks, old movies, Mozart, good conversation, and handsome men; a jokester and storyteller; nutritionist and nurturer, a great cook; lover of sunrises, mountains and sea, animals, and walks up Lonesome Road. She was an ace seamstress, quilter, knitter. She was elegant, generous, loyal, friend to many, volunteer; an FDR Democrat, mostly tolerant of others; big-hearted, broken-hearted; determined, tenacious, bearer of great grief, forgiving; meticulously organized; liberal Methodist, student of Jesus and world religions.
Mrs. Reed was broad-minded, compassionate, curious, ahead of her time; feminist, coop member, champion of underdogs; listener, confidant, and counselor; intelligent, thoughtful, wonder-filled; courageous, faithful, caring, daring; a great hug-giver; lover of life; broken by it; and a fighter to the bittersweet end.
Survivors include her daughters, Josephine Wiley Reed, son-in-law, Tomas Hudlicky, and grandson, Jason Reed Hudlicky, of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada; daughter, Susan Frances Reed, son-in-law Frankie M. Kelly, and grandchildren Liam Oisín Reed-Kelly and Rhiannon Mae Reed-Kelly of Boone, N.C.; son, Laurie Tully Reed III, daughter-in-law, Carolyn M. Dundon, and step-grandsons, Jesse Smith and Donny Philips of Bristol, Vermont; her sister, Sara Scott Joyner Lockhart of Lansdale, Pa.; and nieces and nephews far and wide.
She is predeceased by her parents, Chloe Mae Scott (died 1929) and Elisha Wiley Robert Joyner (died 1961); her stepmother, Josephine Matilda Reed Joyner (died 1970); her beloved husband, Laurie Tully Reed Jr. (died 1991); and daughter, Katherine Thompson Reed (died 1991); and her sister, Miriam Scott Joyner McRae (died 1979).
A wake was held in the home on Monday evening June 8, 2009, followed by a memorial celebration Thursday, June 11, 2009, in the small chapel at St Luke’s Episcopal Church, Boone, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Rd, Suite 4, Boone, N.C. 28607-5038, and/or the Watauga County Humane Society capital campaign, P.O. Box 1835, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Calvin C. Byers
Mr. Calvin C. Byers, 88, of Calvin Byers Road, Boone, died Sunday evening, June 7, 2009, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir.
He was born Dec. 17, 1920 in Watauga County, to James Wade and Mary Proffit Byers.
Mr. Byers served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a plumber by trade.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruby Bodenhamer Byers; his daughter, Mary Williams, of Charlotte; and two granddaughters, Lisa and Michelle Smith, both of Charlotte. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Blaine and Worth Byers; two sisters, Faye Byers and Ezelle Byers Shoemake; and his son-in-law, Johnny Williams.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock at the Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Tom Jackson. The family will receive friends following the graveside service and at other times at the residence.

Clayton Paul 'Pat' Calhoun
Mr. Clayton Paul “Pat” Calhoun, 90, of Newland, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2009.
He was born a son of the late Roby Calvin and Sara Waycaster Calhoun.
Mr. Calhoun worked as a fork lift operator for Great Lake Carbon Corporation in Morganton and drove for Avery County Transportation.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ in Newland.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Calhoun of the home; his two daughters, Barbara Calhoun West and Patricia Colvi, both of Valdese; two step-sons, James Harmon of Rabun Gap, Ga. and Ned Harmon of Newland; a step-daughter, Billie Main of Vilas; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 21 step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jessie Buchanan Calhoun; and two brothers, William and George Calhoun.
Services will be held on Monday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ in Newland. Pastor Dave Atkins and the Rev. Barry Camp will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour at the church. Interment will be held on Tuesday, June 9, at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ Cemetery.
