Watauga Humane Society elects officers, new board members
At the Watauga Humane Society board of directors meeting Thursday, June 11, the board added Jan Watson, Bill Jolly and Cindy Liutkus to its number.

Spring Greens Day to be celebrated at Watauga Farmers' Market

This Saturday morning's Watauga County Farmers’ Market, and also the Wednesday evening market from 4 – 7, will feature sugar snaps, squash, lettuce, strawberries and onions from Zydeco Moon Farm.

More on ASU to take on Montana, McNeese State
Traditional NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) powers Appalachian State, Montana and McNeese State have entered into a six-game agreement that will have Appalachian host Montana in 2012 and travel to face the Griz in Missoula, Mont. in 2013, the three schools announced Thursday.

Sports update: Orioles draft ASU pitcher
The Baltimore Orioles selected Appalachian State pitcher Josh Dowdy in the 38th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Draft Thursday. He is the 1,136th overall selection. Dowdy joins former ASU teammate Jason Rook in the Orioles’ organization. Dowdy was 6-3 with a 5.07 ERA, striking out 68 and walking just 19. He is the fourth Mountaineer to be picked in the 2009 draft. On Wednesday, relief pitcher Zach Quate (Rays) center fielder Rand Smith (Marlins) and third baseman Isaac Harrow (Yankees) were picked.

Updated: School system cuts lead to 28 layoffs
Possibly facing an almost $3 million shortfall from a budget-strapped state, the Watauga County school system announced the layoff of 28 employees on Wednesday.

Updated: Boone looks to pass down-sized budget
Across the nation, cities and towns are tightening their budget belts, and Boone is no exception.
The Boone mayor and town council members spent Tuesday and Wednesday mornings reviewing the proposed budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year.


Watauga sheriff’s reports
June 2 — A motor vehicle theft was reported in an open land area near the 1100 block of Replogle Drive. A 1988 white Jeep Laredo was reported stolen.

Ashe, Boone officials to address water-intake issue
The Ashe County Board of Commissioners will meet with town of Boone officials in a public meeting about a proposed water intake facility in the Brownwood area of Watauga County on Tuesday, June 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Westwood Elementary School in West Jefferson.

June 3 — An incident of communicating threats was reported at 10:51 a.m. on the 300 block of Meadow Hill Drive.

Sports update: ASU trio selected in draft
Appalachian State relief pitcher Zach Quate, center fielder Rand Smith and third baseman Isaac Harrow were selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday. Quate went to the defending American League champion Tampa Bay Rays in the 14th round (439th overall), Smith was tabbed by the Florida Marlins in the 20th round (608th overall) and the New York Yankees made Harrow their 24th-round selection (735th overall) in the 50-round MLB Draft. The Watauga Humane Society is undergoing an abrupt transition as it heads for Saturday's groundbreaking for a new facility.


Superior Court judge rules in favor of town of Boone
A lawsuit filed against the town of Boone by Jeffrey Brooks Templeton and Elizabeth A. Colonna Bird was settled in Superior court on May 25.

Relaying hope
From left, Jean Donaldson and Mary Ruble were among about 400 people at the Relay For Life kickoff dinner Monday night. The dinner, hosted by Greenway Baptist Church and sponsored by Outback Steakhouse, featured the stories of cancer survivors and plans for the annual relay, which will be held at Watauga High School on June 19 and 20. Seventy-two teams are participating this year, with proceeds to benefit research by the American Cancer Society.

Budget crunch may cut school bus routes
The Watauga County school system ended its year Monday, but the school board's summer vacation lasted a scant seven hours before it adjourned for the regular June meeting.

Parkway group seeks trail funding
The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is playing rough, and hikers and nature lovers stand to benefit. The foundation is launching a campaign to improve a popular outdoors area on Grandfather Mountain.

On Sunday, June 28, Grandfather Mountain will host the 85th annual "Singing on the Mountain" at MacRae Meadows.


Watauga Head Start will not re-open in fall

Parents of children attending Watauga Head Start or who had applied for the 2009-10 head start program received letters late last week notifying them the school would be closing its doors permanently effective immediately.

Summer work cools jobless rate
Though the state’s unemployment rate is holding steady, Watauga County is beginning to see job gains as the weather heats up.

Clement enshrined in law Hall of Fame
Boone attorney Charles Clement is among seven who will be inducted into the North Carolina Bar Association’s General Practice Hall of Fame.


Emergency Fest happens Saturday
It is time once again for serious fun hosted by the Watauga County Firefighters Association. The seventh annual Emergency Fest will be held Saturday, June 13 in Appalachian State University’s Raley parking lot off River Street.

May 26 — Shae Morrison, 30, of 323 Tarleton Circle, Boone, was served with a warrant for arrest on a charge of harassing phone calls.

May 29 — A simple physical assault was reported at 5:48 a.m. on the 100 block of Ridgewood Drive.

Seven Devils offers soldier vacations
Some Seven Devils residents have teamed up to offer mountain vacations for troops serving in the 101st Airborne Division.

Boone Fourth parade update
The Downtown Boone Development Association is now registering participants for the Fourth of July parade. The parade will be held on Saturday, July 4, beginning at 3 p.m. with line-up at 1 p.m at the Horn in the West parking lot. This year?s event is at a later time of day to accommodate the Watauga County Farmers? Market. ?This is a big Saturday for the market, and we want to support what they doing,? said DBDA director Tuesdae Rice. Participating in the parade is free and open to the public.
