Pioneers have two

NWC top players
By Steve Behr

Adam Church and Steve Lake were both named Northwestern 4-A Conference Players of the Year in their respective sports.

Though Watauga had several student-athletes receive All-NWC honors, Church was named the Player of the Year in NWC baseball and Lake earned the same honors in boys’ tennis. Both players led their teams to NWC championships and into the state 4-A playoffs.

Church was one of seven Pioneers on the All-NWC baseball list. Center fielder Baine Martin, right fielder/designated hitter David Martin, right fielder/third baseman Trey Lowder, shortstop Cal Hardee and pitcher Jon Sharpe were also on the team. Second baseman Chris Shelton was placed on the honorable mention team, and Pete Hardee was named Coach of the Year.

In tennis, Lake was one of four Pioneers on the all-conference team. Joining him were Michael Smith, Kevin Ashline and Brian Geldmeier. Watauga coach Scott Taylor was also the Coach of the Year.

In girls’ soccer, the Pioneers placed goal keeper Katherine Mayhew with Kendall Baird, Ashlyn Clark, Bethany Miller and Kaitlyn Mullenix. In softball, the Pioneers, who finished sixth in the league, but was the NWC Tournament runner-up, put outfielder Kara Tester and shortstop Chandler Butler on the team. State 4-A champion Alexander Central put eight players and Coach of the Year Monte Sherrill on the team.

Watauga’s track and field teams also had their share of all-league players, which were based on how they finished in the NWC meet. In girls’ track, Ryann Jones was all-NWC in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, while Kayla Schneider was all-league in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs.

Hannah Barbour was all-league in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs and Kristina Kanagy was also all-league in the 3,200-meter run. Kasey Jones was all-NWC in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles.

All four of Watauga’s relay teams earned all-conference honors. Watauga’s 400-meter relay team of Ryann Jones, Kasay Jones, Laiken Williams and Kristina Tracy was all league as was the 800-meter team of Ryann Jones, Williams, Tara Trivette and Kenyon Hall.

Watauga’s 1,600-meter relay team included Hailey Middlebrook, Trivette, Julia Roberts and Williams, and the Pioneers’ 3,200-relay team, which finished first, included Ingrid Forsyth, Emma Seagle, Middlebrook and Barbour.

Plenty of Pioneers made all-league in field events. Tracy was all-conference in the pole vault, and Trivette and Sydney Cook were all-conference in the high jump. Taylor Cook earned all-league honors in the pole vault and in the triple jump.

In the boys’ events, Thomas McDonough earned all-league honors in the 800 and Daniel Osborne did the same in the 1,600 and the 3,200. Andrew Vandenberg did the same in the 3,200.

Ian Boyd was all-conference in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Watauga’s 3,200 relay team of Ethan Poulos, Clark Brackney, Osborne and McDonough won the event and earned all-conference honors.

In field events, Boyd earned all-league in the pole vault and Jordan Pineda earned All-NWC honors in the shot put and discus. He also competed in the state meet in both.
