Watauga Humane Society elects officers, new board members
From the Watauga Humane Society

At the Watauga Humane Society board of directors meeting Thursday, June 11, the board added Jan Watson, Bill Jolly and Cindy Liutkus to its number.

It also elected Shaun Lundy to be president. Lundy was acting as vice president and has been on the board of directors since 2005. He is a local attorney and law partner at Vetro & Lundy, P.C. and former president of the Watauga County Bar Association, among other volunteer activities.

Kathy Copley was elected as secretary. Copley has chaired the “Prevent a Litter” committee since its inception and has served as grant writer since 2005.

Rachel Jolly continues as board liaison. A board member since circuit 2000, she has chaired the membership committee, Dog Jog committee and Santa Paws committee.

On Saturday, June 13, at 11 a.m., the Humane Society will break ground for the Irma Baker Lyons Adoption Center. The public is invited to bring a shovel and be part of a “big dig” group photo. The event will take place above the Humane Society dog parks, just past the Rutherwood Baptist Church at the intersection of Old 421 and Don Hayes Road.

The Humane Society has just completed its annual retreat at which it established strategic priorities that include the transition to the new adoption facility and continued focus on reducing the number of homeless animals.

The Watauga Humane Society is a nonprofit organization in Boone whose mission is to provide a facility where the public can bring unwanted and abandoned animals; relieve suffering among animals; provide food, shelter, medical care and love to homeless dogs and cats while they await permanent homes; help control the number of unwanted animals by offering low-cost spay/neuter services; and educate the public about responsible animal ownership and care.
