ASU’s Boyd named to All-State team

Appalachian State third baseman Katie Boyd raked in another postseason honor by earning North Carolina College Sports Information Association All-State University softball team honors. She was also named second team all-Southern Conference and first-team Mideast region.

A sophomore from Walkertown, Boyd started all 55 games this year for the Mountaineers, hitting a team-best .386. She led the Southern Conference in seven offensive categories and set school records in home runs with 17, RBI with 45, runs scored, 46 and broke SoCon single-season records for walks, 64, on base percentage, .590 and slugging percentage, .879. Her 23 intentional walks was the fourth-highest total in NCAA Division I history.

Boyd ranked nationally in the top-10 in four categories, finishing second in walks, third in on base percentage, sixth in slugging percentage and tied for 10th in home runs.


She is the first Mountaineer to be named to the NCCSIA all-state team.

Boyd and the Mountaineers' won a school record 14 SoCon games and finished tied for second in the regular season and broke 28 single-season school records.

Boruff named All-District
Appalachian State track and field standout Matt Boruff was named first team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District for the second consecutive year CoSIDA announced on Thursday afternoon. Since Boruff was voted onto the first team, the Raleigh native is now eligible for ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

Boruff is the lone Southern Conference representative on the 14-member first team in District III. During the 2009 indoor campaign. the junior captured the SoCon title in the heptathlon for the second straight year and with his performance he shattered his previous school and SoCon record of 4720 points, setting a new record of 5021 points.

He also helped lead the Mountaineers to their 16th indoor title in school history. At the SoCon Outdoor Championships, he grabbed the runner-up titles in the 110-meter hurdles and pole vault.


Off the field, Boruf is majoring in marketing and management and boasts an 3.68 grade point average.
