Library announces

adult programs
By Melanie Marshall

In addition to the upcoming Summer Reading programs for children, the Watauga County Public Library was several offerings for adults.

The upcoming June events include a Pennies for Peace presentation, a painting with acrylics demonstration and a woodcarving demonstration.

Neighborhood Karma Krew, a local non-profit organization, is facilitating the Pennies for Peace presentation to be held on June 2 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Pennies for Peace is a service-learning program designed to broaden students cultural horizons while teaching philanthropic capacities. The program is a project of the Central Asia Institute, founded by Greg Mortenson. He is the author of Three Cups of Tea, one of the Appalachian State University and Watauga library’s summer reading assignments.

According to the organization’s Web site, the penny, one percent of a dollar, is symbolic of the one percent of Gross Domestic Product’ goal set by the United Nations. The goal was for wealthy countries to give foreign aid to impoverished nations each year.

Funds raised are used to establish schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

On June 9, artist Cher Cosper will be doing a demonstration of painting Italian landscapes with acrylics.

During the presentation, Cosper will be creating a piece of art. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia’s bachelor of fine arts program. Cosper is graphic designer turned fine arts artist with paintings in galleries across the Southeast.

The presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Wayne Allen will by the library on June 16 for a woodcarving demonstration titled “What you can do with wood.” This tradition and art form can be completed with a simple knife, but can also be done with chisels, gouges or pocket tools. Typical carvings depict birds, animals or caricatures. Pictures, also known as relief carvings, can also be created.

All the events are free and open to the public. For more information on adult programs, call the library at (828) 264-8784 and ask for the reference desk.
