ASU avoids layoff

Appalachian State's baseball team went seven days without playing a game until last Friday, when the Mountaineers lost 3-1 in the first game of a three-game set with UNC Greensboro.

Sports update:
NWC title game moved to Tuesday
Watauga's Northwestern 4-A Conference championship baseball game with South Caldwell scheduled for Monday night at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls was postponed again. The teams will play Tuesday at Watauga's field at 6:30 p.m. Watauga's softball game with South Caldwell Monday night was also postponed and will be made up Tuesday at 6 p.m. at South Caldwell High.

WHS settles for second, third

Asheville - Watauga's track and field coach Randy McDonough was happy with how the Pioneers' track and field teams performed at the Northwestern 4-A Conference meet at A.C. Reynolds Friday afternoon. He just wished there were more athletes to provide points.

Pioneers finish off Cavs
The last time Watauga played East Burke, Pioneers pitcher Cal Hardee labored over the two-day game, which was postponed because of lightning, and East Burke rolled to an easy victory.


ASU outlasts UNCG
GREENSBORO - Appalachian State thought it finally produced the winning runs in the top of the ninth inning when Chris Alessandria hit a grand slam.

South Caldwell's offense finally got the best of Wataugafs softball team Thursday.
