Providence blanks WHS 2-0

CHARLOTTE — Watauga’s appearance in the state 4-A girls’ soccer playoffs ended early with a 2-0 loss to Providence Wednesday night.

Providence (12-4-1) got goals from Callie Cavanaugh and Tanner Murphy. Goal keeper Kristen lawson was credited with the shutout.


Watauga finishes the season with a 8-10-3 record, but played against teams that finished with a 119-27-16 overall non-confernece record. The Pioneers, who finished third in the Northwestern 4-A Conference, played against conference opponents that finished with a combined 38-18-8 mark.


Boys tennis
Watauga’s Steve Lake, the West Regional’s No. 1 seeded singles player, takes on Matt Alexander of Huntersville Hopewell in the first round of the state finals. Alexander is the No. 4 seed from the Mideast Region.


Watauga’s Michael Smith is the West’s No. 4 seed and also opens the tournament Friday against No. 1 seeded Robbie Mudge of R.J. Reynolds in Winston-Salem.
