WHS settles for second, third
From staff reports

Asheville — Watauga’s track and field coach Randy McDonough was happy with how the Pioneers’ track and field teams performed at the Northwestern 4-A Conference meet at A.C. Reynolds Friday afternoon. He just wished there were more athletes to provide points.

The Watauga boys’ team finished third to East Burke and A.C. Reynolds, while the girls team finished second to A.C. Reynolds.

Watauga’s boys racked up 139 points, while East Burke won with 153.33. A.C. Reynolds was second with 142.66. Watauga’s girls finished with 207 points, while A.C. Reynolds won with 224.5.

Watauga’s girls dominated the distance running and, the pole vault and high jump. In distance running, Kayla Schneider won the 800-meter run an Hailey Middlebrook, a freshman, was fourth.

McDowell’s Catherine Burton won the 1,600-meter run, but Watauga’s Hannah Barbour, Schneider and Kanagy finished second, third and fourth respectively. Barbour also won the 3,200-meter run, while Kanagy was third and Schneider was fifth.

“Our distance runners did very well,” McDonough said. “Everybody did their part. They did about what we expected them to do.”

Watauga also got a victory from freshman Tara Trivette in the high jump with a leap of 5-feet, 3-inches. Sydney Cook, a sophomore, was second, and Kasey Jones was fifth.

A.C. Reynolds’s Meredith Wilson won the pole vault, but Watauga’s Taylor Cook was second, Kristina Tracy was third and Sydney Cook fourth.

Jones also won the 100-meter hurdles and finished second in the 300-meter hurdles.

In the boys’ meet, Thomas McDonough finished first in the 800-meter run, while teammate Justin Martin was second. Daniel Osborne was second in the 1,600-meter run and second to teammate Andrew Vandenburg, a freshman, in the 3,200-meter run.

Ian Boyd added second-place finishes in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

“The boys was pretty wide open,” Randy McDonough said. “I thought we had a chance. Both teams we sent did everything they could. It was like squeezing blood from a turnip. Everybody we had did well. We didn’t have the depth the other teams had.”

Watauga moves on to the western regional, which is Saturday at A.C. Reynolds. One week later, Watauga’s qualifiers run in the state meet at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro.
