Two Mountaineers released
Two key players in Appalachian State’s 2005 national championship team were released by their respective professional teams earlier in the week.
Quarterback Richie Williams was cut by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Tuesday and defensive end Jason Hunter was released by the Green Bay Packers one day earlier.
Williams, who signed a free agent deal in 2006, played in 52 games during his three seasons with the Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League. Williams completed 60 percent of his passes and threw for 2,077 yards and 11 touchdowns, but also tossed nine interceptions.
He also ran for 531 yards and scored two touchdowns, but also fumbled the ball away five times.
Hunter had two sacks in his three seasons with the Packers. He played mostly on special teams in his 42 games with the team.
Williams led Appalachian State to a national championship, which included a 21-16 victory over Northern Iowa in the national championship game. Williams, nursing an injured ankle, came off the bench in that game to lead the Mountaineers on a touchdown drive.
Hunter ended up scoring the winning touchdown in that game when he scooped up an Eric Sanders fumble and went 15 yards for the score.
