Turn the Knights out
By Steve Behr

Watauga’s baseball team had plenty to celebrate this weekend.

For starters, there will not be a co-Northwestern 4-A Conference championship in baseball. Alexander Central saw to that Friday night.

Alexander Central beat South Caldwell 3-2 Friday night, which gave Watauga sole possession of the NWC title. The Pioneers finished the NWC season with a 10-2 record, while second-place South Caldwell finished 9-3 in league.

One day later, Watauga beat North Davidson 4-3 courtesy of a home run by pinch hitter Austin Story and an RBI single by Adam Church in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The championship is Watauga’s first since 2001 and it breaks a three-year reign held by South Caldwell. The Pioneers, (16-6, 10-2 NWC) will host T.C. Roberson in a non-conference game Tuesday, then will play the winner of the East Burke-Alexander Central game Thursday at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls. Those two teams play Tuesday night.

Watauga was able to make up its game with North Davidson because the Pioneers had Friday night off. They got a standout pitching performance from Will Littlejohn, who after giving up a game-opening home run to Zack Joyce, scattered a total of five hits.

“He came out and threw strikes, which was very important,” assistant coach Andy Fox said. “He was around the plate all night and kept their hitters off balance. We played defense behind him and he threw strikes.”

Littlejohn struck out just two, but also walked just one and hit one batter. North Davidson scored its other two runs on a Kelly Seacrest two-run homer in the fifth inning. But Littlejohn recovered and got Landon Lassiter to fly out to end the inning.

“They put the ball in play and we had good defense behind us,” Littlejohn said. “We got them out, so it’s a good win.”

Watauga’s offense provided Littlejohn with just enough offense so he could raise his record to 2-1. Trey Lowder smacked a one-out double in the fourth inning to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead. When Seacrest put the Knights back on top 3-2, Story led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run.

Baine Martin was hit by a pitch and scored on Church’s single, which gave Watauga a 4-3 lead Littlejohn was able to preserve. Church and Lowder both went 2-for-3 from the plate.

Joyce had two hits for North Davidson.

“I tried to make sure they didn’t get a hold of anything and keep the ball down and make sure they hit ground balls,” Littlejohn said.
