Sports update: Mountaineers bash N.C. Central 17-0
Appalachian State’s baseball team struck quickly and often at North Carolina Central and cruised to a 17-0 victory over the Eagles at Smith Stadium Wednesday.

Cougars blank WHS
Watauga's varsity softball team lost twice in the last two days, falling to powerful Alexander Central 12-0 Tuesday and 5-4 to Wilkes Central in five innings before rain washed the rest of the game out.

Around the area: Blalock sinks hole-in-one
Brian Blalock of Banner Elk sank a hole-in-one at the Mountain Glen Golf Club Spring Captainfs Choice Tournament held in Newland on April 25. Blalock used a 4-iron on hole No. 4, which is 181 yards from the tee. David Jennings, Bobby Franklin and Terry Hollifield witnessed the shot.

ICARD - Watauga’s girls’ soccer team returned to its winning ways with a 5-0 victory over East Burke Friday night just before a lighting storm moved through the area.

Evans earns SoCon honor in touranment
ELON - Former Watauga state champion Anna Lee Evans was named the Most Outstanding Performer in the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament over the weekend as she helped College of Charleston beat top-seeded Furman 4-1 Sunday.

Storm finishes second at regional
Watauga’s Storm 13-under girls basketball team finished second in the YBOA Western Regional Qualifier April 18. The Storm lost its first pool game to the Lake Norman Magic 42-39, but rebounded by beating the Lady Royals White 63-26, the Spindale Express 55-47 and the North Davidson Lady Knights 43-28. The Storm lost to the Lady Royals Blue 60-46 in the championship game. The Storm finished 19-10 overall and did not finish lower than fourth in all six tournaments it played. They’ll play in the YBOA state championships on May 8-10. Team members are (not necessarily in order of the photo): Kinsley Alderson, Leah Bishop, Whitney Dunnigan, Rachel Foutz, Hannah Margolis, Brooke Rhodes, emily Rochelle, Danielle Welsh and Savannah Wood.
