WHS sweeps NWC tuneup
From staff reports

Watauga won both the boys’ and girls’ track meet involving four Northwestern 4-A Conference teams on Senior Day Monday at Jack Groce Stadium.

The boys’ team finished with 80 points, well in front of McDowell (67) and South Caldwell (63). Alexander Central finished fourth with 57 points.

In the girls’ meet, Watauga cruised to 120 points. Alexander Central was second with 76.5 points, followed by South Caldwell with 43 and McDowell with 22.5.

It was Watauga’s final dress rehearsal before the conference championships, which are April 6 at A.C. Reynolds.

“The boys is wide open,” Watauga coach Randy McDonough said. “East Burke is the defending champs, but they lost some people from last year that will cut into there points. In the girls’ meet, A.C. Reynolds is the team to beat. We can do it, but everybody’s going to have to run a great meat. We’ll have some girls doing three or four events each, so they’re going to be tired by the end of next week.”

Ian Boyd was the one Watauga individual to win two events in the boys’ meet for the Pioneers. Boyd captured first place the 110-meter high hurdles and the pole vault. Thomas McDonough won the 400-meter dash and Andrew Vandenburg won the 1,600-meter run.

Boyd also finished second in the 300 hurdles. Reid Harris finished second to Boyd in the pole vault, and fourth in the long jump and 100-meter dash.

Derek Calhoun was second in the high jump and Darrow Goff was third in that event and fourth in the 400-meter dash. Gabby Romano was second in the shot put and the discus.

Ryan McGuire was third in the 200-meter dash and fourth in the 400. Daniel Osborne took third in the 800 and Clark Brinkley was third in the 1,600. Gavin Lawrence was fourth in the 200 followed by Scott Murrell, who was fifth in that event. Ethan Poulos was fifth in the 800.

Randy McDonough said not all of the Watauga boys were at the meet, and others used it as a workout day. Still, he was happy that the Pioneers were able to run away with a win.

“They did what they needed to do,” McDonough said. “They all ran hard and I was very proud of what they did yesterday.”

In the girls’ meet, Ryann Jones captured victories in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and finished second in the 400. Kayla Schneider won the 800. Hannah Barbour won the 1,600 and finished second in the 800. Laura Gulliver won the 300 hurdles and was second in the triple jump.

Kristina Tracy won the triple jump and added second-place finishes in the long jump and pole vault. Taylor Cook won the pole vault and took fourth in the long jump, while Tara Trivette won the high jump. Watauga’s 3,200-meter relay team also finished in first place.

The Pioneers did not need to win events to add depth to their score. Kenyon Hall was second in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and Kathryn Smith was second in the discus. Kristina kanagy was second in the 1,600 and third in the 800, while Schneider was third in the 1,600. Laiken Williams was third in the discus and fifth in the 200, while Hailey Middlebrook was third in the 400. She was followed by Julia Roberts, who was fourth in that event.
