Robertson to play
in East-West showdown
By Steve Behr
Watauga continues to send players to the East-West All-Star soccer game.
The latest Pioneer to be invited is Ben Robertson, who will play in the game July 21 at UNC Greensboro’s soccer stadium.
Robertson dished out 25 assists for the Pioneers in 2008. Watauga finished 15-6-2 overall, 10-2 in the Northwestern 4-A Conference. The Pioneers beat Berry Academy 10-0 in the first round of the playoffs before falling to East Mecklenburg 6-5 on penalty kicks in the second round.
Robertson, who was all-NWC and all-region in 2007 and 2008, set a team record with five assists in the Pioneers’ win over Berry Academy. His 25 assists in 2008 and his 40 career assists are also team records. His 140 career points (54 goals, 40 assists) are second to Patrick Murphy’s 172 points.
Robertson is the first Watauga player to play in the game since Ben Norman played in 2005.
Robertson is one of two players from the NWC to be named to the team. Michael Nelson, a defender from A.C. Reynolds, is also on the team. A.C. Reynolds’ coach Patrick Gladys also coaches the West team.
