Lake named all-conference
From staff reports
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Appalachian State men’s tennis standout Bobby Lake, a former Watauga standout, was named first team all-Southern Conference, the league’s office announced Thursday.
This is the first postseason award for the senior in his tenure with the Mountaineers and is the first time a Mountaineer has been named first team all-SoCon in men’s tennis since 1997, when Pedro Lopes earned the honor.
Lake had an impressive senior season by posting a 13-10 record overall and a 5-5 mark in SoCon action. Two of Lake’s strongest wins of the season came against No. 97-ranked Diego Cubas (South Carolina) when Lake notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory. He also beat No. 69-ranked Damon Gooch of Elon 6-2, 6-4.
He also helped the Mountaineers earn their first ever national ranking at No. 67. Lake was ranked at No. 125 in singles play and was named the SoCon Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 17.
Orcun Seyrek of UNC Greensboro was named the SoCon Player of the Year, while Paul Scarpa of Furman was named the SoCon Coach of the Year.
