WHS blanks Spartans
From staff reports
It seems the only thing that could stop Watauga’s boys’ tennis team Monday was the weather.
The rain storm that passed through the area Monday brought Watauga’s Northwestern 4-A Conference tennis match with South Caldwell to a halt, but not before the Pioneers tucked away a 5-0 victory over the Spartans at the Carroll Complex.
Watauga (15-2, 10-0 NWC) won five matches in straight sets and was on its way to winning a sixth before the rain fell. Preston Stigall, playing the No. 5 seed, was in front of Caleb Edwards 6-2, 2-1 before his match was suspended.
Stigall’s match was the only one that was not completed. Michael Smith, playing No. 2 singles, and No. 3-seeded Kevin Ashline both won their matches 6-0, 6-0. Brian Geldmeier won his No. 4 singles match 6-0, 6-1 and No. 6 seeded Davis Roberts won his match 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 1 singles, Steve Lake beat Marshall Frank 6-1, 6-1, completing the sweep. No doubles matches were played.
