A planet full of celebrations

Wednesday, April 22, is Earth Day, with a variety of events to recognize the environment and commemorate sustainability efforts.
Local Earth Day events include a celebration in the Plemmons Student Union of Appalachian State University, with live music, face painting, community booths and food. The events are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
At 7 p.m., the movie “The 11th Hour” will be shown in ASU’s I.G. Greer Theater, followed by a panel discussion.
On April 23, Green Grooves takes place at the Dragonfly Theater in Boone, with video featuring ASU sustainability actions and performances by three bands. The events are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Also Thursday, at 7 p.m., David Johnston will be discussing Sustainable Development in Room 114 of the ASU Belk Library.
Arbor Day is also this week, observed on Friday, April 24. Green Mother Goods in Boone is hosting an Arbor Day celebration, with children’s activities, a puppet making workshop and show by Elkland Art Center, and a showing of “Kilowatt Ours: A Plan to Re-Energize America.” People are also invited to make bird feeders, plant seeds, and create a puppet tree.
The activities begin at 3:30 p.m., with the movie showing at 5:30 and 7 p.m.
