Orville Gilbert Calhoun Jr.
Mr. Orville Gilbert Calhoun, Jr., 81, of Beech Mountain, N.C., passed away on Monday, April 6, 2009, at the Hospice Care Center in Orange City, Fla.
He was born in Abbeville, S.C. and was a graduate of UVA. He was a retired lawyer, having worked for Haynesworth Law Firm in Greenville, S.C. for 42 years. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and was a member of the Beech Mountain Club, Poincett Club, the American Bar Assoc. and the SCC Bar.
Survivors include three daughters, Caroline (Jack) Cheney of DeLand, Fla., Katherine Calhoun (Jay Smith) of Moab, Utah and Helen Bartholomy of Medford, Ore.; one sister, Evelyn (Donald) Bales of Sanford, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Orville Gilbert Calhoun.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Old Willington Cemetery in Willington, S.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129 or to the YMCA of Greenville, 601 East McBee Avenue, Suite 212, Greenville, SC 29601.

Bobby Ray Harmon
Mr. Bobby Ray Harmon, 60, of Boone, the Foscoe community, died Monday afternoon, April 13, 2009, at Johnson City Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 6, 1949 in Hickory, a son of the late Floyd David and Elsie Hahnemann Harmon.
Mr. Harmon was a truck driver and a member of Shulls Mills Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Janet A. Harmon of Charlotte; one son, Michael Harmon of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Jaxon Luke Harmon, Brandon Scruggs and Taylor Scruggs; one sister, Lillian Dianna Ball Ketron of Kingsport, Tenn.; and one brother, Peter Heinz Harmon of Farnam, Neb.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jason Ray Harmon.
Memorial services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, with Minister Lance Hostetter and the Rev. Tim Coffey officiating. The family will receive friends Friday afternoon prior to the service from 3 until 4 o’clock.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Foundation of Hope, 9401 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, N.C. 27617.

Howard R. Jones
Mr. Howard R. Jones, 81, of 1698 Chestnut Grove Road, Boone, died Tuesday afternoon, April 14, 2009, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation.
He was born Sept. 17, 1927 in Watauga County, a son of the late Rufus Senter Jones and Edna Baker Jones.
Mr. Jones was a retired farmer and gardener, and attended Meat Camp Baptist Church.
Survivors include a special friend, Pat Norris of Boone; three sisters, Lena Corbin of Rapidan, Va., Pearl Moretz, and Mary J. Gentry and husband, Richard, all of Boone; four brothers, Dean Jones and wife, Betty, and J.B. Jones and wife, Muriel, all of Boone, Jimmy Jones and wife, Diane, of Fort Worth, Tex., and Gary Jones and wife, Rita, of Boone; one sister-in-law, Ruby C. Jones of Boone; and one brother-in-law, Rodney Walker of Wilkesboro. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including Cindy and Scott Jones.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Bea Storie, Ruby Shore, Odas Corbin, and Mildred Walker; and one brother, Earl T. Jones.
Services will be conducted Friday evening, April 17, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Mike Townsend. Graveside services and burial will be conducted Saturday morning, at 10:00 o'clock, at Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 6:00 until 7:30, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Finley Houston ‘Hugh’ Mast Jr.
Mr. Finley Houston “Hugh” Mast, Jr., 57, of Poga Road, Butler, Tenn., and a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Monday afternoon, April 13, 2009 at his home.
He was born August 18, 1951 in Watauga County to Jimmie Farthing Mast and the late Finley Houston Mast, Sr.
Mr. Mast was a member of Forest Grove Baptist Church. He was a truck driver and welder for STM Trucking in Bakersville.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Norris Mast; one daughter, Stephanie McGlamery and husband, Jerry, of Zionville; two sons, Tommy Mast and wife, Sherry, of Sugar Grove and James Mast of the home; four grandchildren, Kelli and Kristi McGlamery, both of Zionville, and Jackson and Timmy Mast, both of Sugar Grove; his mother, Jimmie Farthing Mast of Sugar Grove; one brother, Jeff Mast and wife, Jo-anne, of Millboro, Va.; and one brother-in-law, Robert Norris and wife, Beverly, of Toccoa, Ga.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Claude and Dorothy Norris.
Services were conducted Thursday evening at 7 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Quincy Norris. The family received friends Thursday evening from 5:30 until 7 o’clock, prior to services, at the funeral home. Graveside services will be conducted Friday morning at 11 o’clock at the Finley Patterson Mast Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Finley Patterson Mast Cemetery Fund, in care of Mike Mast, 442 Frozenhead Ridge Road, Sugar Grove, N.C. 28679.

Rexford Clyde ‘Rex’ Weaver
Mr. Rexford Clyde “Rex” Weaver, 55, of Pottertown Road, Todd, died Monday evening, April 13, 2009 at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 21, 1953 in Watauga County, to Edford Lee and Mary Potter Weaver.
Mr. Weaver was a member of Tamarack Church of Christ and attended Elk Knob Baptist Church. He worked as a fork lift operator for Maymead Block Company in Boone and more recently was a truck driver for Mike Neaves Trucking, Inc in Jefferson.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Evelyn Lewis Weaver; four sons, Jesse Weaver and wife, Amanda, of Todd, Travis Weaver and wife, Melissa, of Boone, Terry Weaver of Todd and Jason Weaver, of Lexington, Ky.; and three grandchildren, Mae Drianne Saydie Weaver of Todd, and Emma and Sawyer Weaver, both of Boone.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock at Elk Knob Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. J. C. Greene and the Rev. Derick Wilson. Burial followed in the Potter-Main Cemetery.
The family received friends Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Rhoda Greene Ford
Mrs. Rhoda Greene Ford, 90, of 1447 Friendship Church Road, Boone, died Sunday morning, April 12, 2009.
She was born May 19, 1918, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Horace and Tisha Greene.
Mrs. Ford was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Margie Ford Mote of Brevard; and three sons, Joe Ingle Ford and wife, Julia, of the Foscoe community, Norman J. Ford, and William Rannie Ford and wife, Linda G., all of Boone. She is also survived by five grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Ingle Ford; and two grandchildren.
Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, April 14, 2009, at 2:00 o'clock, at Friendship United Methodist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Edwin McKinney. Burial followed in the Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends Tuesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock, at the church, prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Donna Lyons, PO Box 401, Boone, N.C. 28607.

William Bradley Harris Jr.
Mr. William Bradley Harris, Jr., 68, of Ravens View, Boone, died Monday morning, April 13, 2009 at home.
He was born June 22, 1940 in Wadsworth, Ohio, a son of the late William B. Harris, Sr., and Elsie Workman Harris.
Mr. Harris was a retired social worker, having worked with the Bethlehem Community Center in Columbia, S.C. He was a member at Boone United Methodist Church where he was active in the Angel Food Ministry and the Senior Adult Coordinator. He was also active in the AARP.
Surviving are his wife, Louise Harris; one daughter, Ann McKay and husband, John, of Columbia, S.C.; one son, David Harris and wife, Amy, of West Jefferson; three granddaughters, Audrey Harris, and Crystal and Monica McKay.
Memorial services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Boone United Methodist Church, officiated by Dr. George Naff. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon immediately following the services.

Bynum ‘Dick’ Jordan Sr.
Mr. Bynum “Dick” Jordan, Sr., 81, of 1347 Flowers Branch Road, Deep Gap, died Sunday morning, April 12, 2009, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 30, 1927, in Watauga County, a son of the late Lee and Bessie Watson Jordan.
Mr. Jordan was a retired farm owner and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dollie Greene Jordan; four daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Davis (Jenny) and Reverend and Mrs. Larry Estes (Joyce), all of Granite Falls, Mr. and Mrs. David Greer (Pat) of Lenoir, and Dr. and Mrs. Larry Anderson (Diana) of Morganton; and two sons, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Jordan (Jim) of Elkin, and Mr. and Mrs. June Jordan (June) of Ferguson. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Kate Watson Carlton and Maude Edith Jordan Robbins; and three brothers, Ralph Watson, Fred Watson, and Jay Jordan.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, April 15, 2009, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn. Burial will follow in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00 o'clock, at the chapel, prior to the service.

Charlotte M. Lewis
Mrs. Charlotte M. Lewis, 78, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, died Sunday morning, April 12, 2009, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Joanne J. Parr and husband, John, of Rogersville, Tenn., and Candy M. Watson and husband, Dan, of Castaic, Calif.; three granddaughters, Trish Salisbury of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Jenny Mumford and Missy Watson, both of Washington State; and one grandson, Mark Salisbury of Burlington, Wisc. She is also survived by four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, and brothers and sisters in Germany.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earle H. Lewis.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Tammy Wagner
Tammy Wagner, 46, of Boone, N.C., went home to be with her Lord on Friday, April 10, 2009.
She was born on Dec. 12, 1962, to Wilma Campbell Dillman of Butler, Tenn. and the late Herbert Wagner. She was an employee of Bojangles of Boone, N.C.
In addition to her mother, Wilma Dillman, Tammy is survived by one daughter, Jenna Gill of Boone, N.C.; one son, Jonathan Elmore and wife, Kristin, of Visalia, Calif.; three sisters, Elishia Forrester, Tanya Mays, both of Butler, Tenn., and Kimberly Smithmyer of South Carolina; one granddaughter, Lana Marie Gill of Boone, N.C.; an aunt, Judy Dyson and husband, Jeff, of South Carolina; an uncle, Vernon “Buddy” Campbell of South Carolina; special friend that was like a father, Richard Smith; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her father, Tammy was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Francis Sue Campbell and Vernon “Bud” Campbell.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Harvey White officiating.
A graveside service will also follow from the Butler Memorial Cemetery.
Active Pallbearers will be: Jeremy Mays, Jonathan Elmore, Richard Forrester, Richard Forrester II, Jeff Dyson and Nick Sennifelder.
Honorary Pallbearers are: Vernon “Buddy” Campbell, Richard Smith, Jim Syndergaard and Bob Smithmyer.

Virginia D. ‘Betty’ Harmon
Mrs. Virginia D. “Betty” Harmon, 75, of 4592 Flat Springs Road, Elk Park, died Thursday afternoon, April 9, 2009, at her home.
She was born April 1, 1934, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Charlie William Mast and Bradie Presnell Mast.
Mrs. Harmon was a homemaker and a member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Ernest Harmon; one daughter, Carol Tester and husband, Tom, of Sugar Grove; one son, Tommy Harmon and wife, Tammy, of Elk Park; one granddaughter, Rebecca Tester of Sugar Grove; and one grandson, Jim Tester of Banner Elk. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Ward; one brother, Cecil Mast; and one half-brother, Chester Mast.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon, April 11, 2009, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating was the Rev. Quincy Norris. Burial followed in the Harmon Family Cemetery.
