CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Brittany Gaston tied game one with her first homer of the year but Chattanooga won it in the bottom of the ninth on an Michelle Fuzzard RBI fielders choice Saturday afternoon in Chattanooga. The Mocs won game two 4-0.

The Mountaineers tied the score in the top of the sixth in the first game when Michelle Lighton hit an RBI single through the left side to drive in Sarah Rappe. The Mocs retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Brittany Eason.

Gaston homered over the left field fence for her first of the year to send the game into extra innings.

Kayla Richardson picked up the loss for the Mountaineers, going 8 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits while striking out seven batters.

Richardson was named Softball Pitcher of the Month for the Southern Conference before the doubleheader by the league’s office.

Richardson went 6-4 on the month with a 1.57 ERA, with eight complete games out of nine started. The former Ashe County standout had a streak of 25 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.

She struck out 58 batters, including a career-high tying 10 in a 2-0 shutout over Elon. Richardson allowed four or less hits in 5-of-9 starts, allowing just four earned runs in those starts combined.


Rappe had two hits for Appalachian State.

The Mocs scored in just two innings in game two, but it was enough as the Mountaineers were unable to get on the board and falling 4-0.
