WHS golfers finish sixth
From staff reports
Watauga’s boys’ golf team finished sixth in its weekly Northwestern 4-a Conference tournament held at Orchard Hills Golf Club Monday.
Watauga finished with a team score of 352. Alexander Central won the event with a 305, well in front of second-place Freedom, which had a 330.
Tyler Grooms of A.C. Reynolds was the medalist for the tournament after firing a round of 72. Watauga got an 84 from Ben Beason, an 88 from Brandon Reynolds and a 90 from Trey McNeil and Spencer Hodges.
Robert Warren shot a 92 and Dylan Cook a 95.
“The round at Orchard Hills Golf Club was tough,” Watauga coach Mike Northern said. “The players dealt with high winds and chilly weather all day long.”
One week earlier, Watauga played at Marion Lakes on March 30. Warren shot a 79, while Reynolds had an 86. Hodges and Beason both fired an 89.
Watauga is also in sixth place in the overall standings. The top three automatically qualify for the regional tournament.
“At this point, we have to stay focused and finish the season strong,” Northern said. “Our team is young and believe the valley we are in will serve to motivate the team to work hard in the off season to improve our scoring.”
Watauga is off during Easter Break and will return to competition April 21 in Asheville. A.C. Reynolds will be the host school.
