Scoreless battle
By Steve Behr

Watauga had plenty of chances to score a goal against Freedom Wednesday night. Freedom had its share of chances to score a goal against the Pioneers.

Neither team could do it.

After 80 minutes of regulation time and two 10-minute overtimes, Watauga and Freedom huffed and puffed and still had to settle for a 0-0 tie. It was Watauga’s third scoreless tie of the season. The Pioneers, who have not lost in their last three games, are 3-7-3 overall, 2-2-1 in the Northwestern 4-A Conference.

Watauga, which won’t play again until April 21 against A.C. Reynolds, looked ready to take at least a 1-0 lead in the first half after a corner kick by Austin Williamson reached the front of the Freedom goal. Ashlyn Clark looked like she would score Watauga’s first goal, but her header shot was saved by Freedom’s keeper.

Watauga had already taken two corner kicks before that, but neither got very close to the Patriots’ goal.

Watauga nearly had another goal when a shot taken an a half-empty net went wide of the goal.

“We had quite a few chances,” Watauga coach Johnny Gailes said. “I think it was a tough match. They came out there and played hard. The girls really wanted it, but it just didn’t fall for us tonight.”

Freedom (4-5-2, 3-1-1) had its chances to score goals, too, particularly in the second half and the overtime periods. One corner kick landed within point-blank range, but the Patriots could not get anybody to either kick or head the ball into the Watauga goal.

“We had our chances in front of the goal and we just missed by inches,” Gailes said. “It’s frustrating for them and frustrating for us.

The lack of goal scoring was a contrast to the five goals the Pioneers scored in a win over South Caldwell last Friday. Watauga also beat Alexander Central 1-0 on April 1.

The Pioneers get some time off until they face A.C. Reynolds, which is 9-2-1 overall, 6-0-0 in the NWC.

A.C. Reynolds beat Watauga 1-0 earlier this season.

No jayvee game was played.
