Watauga’s Sharpe wins state award
CANTON — The North Carolina Spit Tobacco Education Program (STEP) is proud to announce that Watauga’s Jon Sharpe is this week’s NC STEP “No Spit” All-Star of the Week. Sharpe tossed a complete-game, nine-inning one-hitter in a 1-0 win over East Burke, recording 14 strike outs with just one walk.
As a condition of eligibility, Sharpe has pledged not to use spit tobacco or any tobacco products on or off the field. As a weekly winner, Sharpe is now eligible to win the N.C. STEP “No Spit” All-Star of the Year Award.
ASU’s Kreuter fires a 76
MORGANTON — Jordan Kreuter shot a team-best 76 and Appalachian State women’s golf team sits in fourth place after the first day of competition at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate.
Kreuter is tied for fifth after the first day while Brooke DeHart is seventh with a 77. Kerri Dice shot an 81 and is tied for 18th while Mary Kate Bowman and Emily McGonagle shot an 85.
Hudson leads ASU going into Tuesday
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Dustin Hudson carded rounds of 70 and 76 to finish the day in seventh place at the Charleston Southern Spring Kickoff Tournament. Appalachian State’s men's golf team hit 294-311-605 (+37) for the day to stand in a tie for seventh heading into Tuesday’s third and final round.
Jacob Eggers is tied for 18th place at 72-78-150 (+8) while Taylor Hines shot 76-78-154 (+12) for a tie for 33rd.
Casey Johnson carded a 76-79-155 (+13) to place alone in 36th and Lance Wheeler was one stroke behind at 77-79-156 (+14).
Jake Wiesehan is competing individually and shot a 75-76-151 (+9) for a tie in 23rd place.
Campbell University leads after the first day with a 290-295-585 (+17) and Bethune-Cookman's Daniel Venema leads all individual players with a 71-70-141 (-1).
