Edens silences Furman
From staff reports

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Aubrey Edens allowed just one run over eight innings and Chris Alessandria drove in three runs as Appalachian State beat Furman 4-1, taking its second straight game from the Paladins.

Appalachian State beat Furman 24-4 Saturday night and lost 5-3 to the Paladins Friday night.

Edens allowed just six hits and one unearned run over eight innings of work for ASU. He fanned five batters and walked two in the winning effort, as he moved to 2-2 on the year.

Zach Quate then entered in the ninth to close out the game. He allowed just one hit and struck out a batter to earn his third save of the season.

Alessandria led off the second inning with a single to left field and advanced to third on a pair of base hits before scoring the first run of the game on a double play.

Following the run, Furman’s (11-16, 5-10 SoCon) Barry Benton retired 13-straight batters as the Paladins evened the score with a run in the bottom of the third.

Wes Hobson broke up the streak with a two-out single in the top of the sixth and moved to third on Isaac Harrow’s double down the first-base line. Chris Alessandria then drove both players home with a line-drive single to center field to give the Mountaineers (13-16, 5-11) a 3-1 advantage.

The Mountaineers tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning when Ryan Arrowood led off with a bunt single and advanced to third base on hits by Rand Smith and Hobson before scoring on a fielder’s choice by Alessandria.

Alessandria, Hobson and Smith each had two hits in the game, and Smith extended his hitting steak to 18 games.

The senior had eight hits on the weekend as ASU won its first Southern Conference series of the season.

Isaac Harrow picked up four RBIs Saturday, giving him the program’s all-time record of 163. He replaced Tom Sams as the programs’ all-time leader, who had 160 from 1980-83.

Appalachian plays at Tennessee Tuesday at 7 p.m. before hosting Samford next weekend.
