The award was created in 1965 and is the highest civilian honor granted in North Carolina.

Hodges has served as the clerk of court since his election in 1992, running unopposed since the 1994 election.

By receiving the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, Hodges joins the ranks of the Rev. Billy Graham, Bob Timberlake, Maya Angelou, Michael Jordan and local winners Bob Cole of Todd, and, most recently, former Blowing Rocket editor Jerry Burns.

The award is presented in recognition of extraordinary service to the state. Contributions to one’s community, extra effort in one’s career and many years of service to an organization are a few of the guidelines by which recipients are chosen.

Those who receive the award are presented a certificate and the privilege to propose the official North Carolina toast.

Hodges retired from his position as clerk of court effective March 31.
