ASU splits with UNCG

GREENSBORO — Michelle Lighton went 3-for-4 and Appalachian State’s softball team took advantage of three UNCG errors and beat the Spartans 7-0 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday. UNCG won the first game 2-1.
Ashley Stubbs threw a complete game six-hitter for the Mountaineers to pick up her sixth win of the season. She also had a hit and scored a run at the plate.
Appalachian State (15-17, 8-4 SoCon) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, taking advantage of back-to-back throwing errors by the Spartans.
Morgan Price made the score 4-0 on an RBI ground out in the fourth. After Appalachian loaded the bases, Brittany Gaston drove in two with a single to right.
Lighton capped off the scoring for the Mountaineers’ with an RBI double to drive in Sarah Rappe. The three-hit game was the first of Lighton’s career and pushes her hitting streak to a career-high six games. With her two stolen bases, Rappe broke the school record for consecutive steals without being caught at 16.
Andrea McIntyre had a single in the seventh to move her hitting streak to five in a row. Brittany Ausley had two hits for the Spartans.
Kaitlin Merkt hit a two-run homer in the first inning of game one for UNCG and proved to be the game-winner as the Spartans won 2-1.
Kayla Richardson walked Ausley and Merkt hit her fourth of the year for the 2-0 lead.
Lighton led off the third with her fourth home run of the year to make it 2-1, but ASU couldn’t bring another run across, leaving nine runners on base.
Richardson allowed just three hits, while striking out seven and allowed just the one walk, but took the loss falling to 8-9 on the year.
