Pioneers drub Reynolds 9-0

ASHEVILLE — Watauga’s tennis team continued its stampede through the Northwestern 4-A Conference Monday with a 9-0 victory over A.C. Reynolds.

All of Watauga’s singles players won their matches in straight sets. Michael Smith, at No. 2 singles, won his match 6-0, 6-0, and Steve Lake beat Kyle Anderson at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1.


The rest of the Pioneers (7-1, 4-0 NWC) managed similar victories. Kevin Ashline won his match 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and Brian Geldmeier won his match at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-3. No. 5 seeded Preston Stigall rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 victory, and Davis Roberts claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 6.

It wasn’t much different in doubles. Lake teamed with Smith to beat Anderson and Keith Blate at No. 1 doubles 8-1. Ashline matched up with Geldmeier to win 8-1 at No. 2 doubles and Stigall teamed with Roberts to win 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

Watauga also won two exhibition matches. Ryan Schweitzer won his singles match 6-1, and Aaron Evans teamed with Sam Littlejohn to win 8-1 in a double match.

Girls’ soccer
MARION — McDowell beat Watauga 3-0 in prep girls soccer Tuesday night.

Watauga slipped to 0-4-2 during the season and has yet to score a goal. McDowell improved to 6-0-1 overall, 1-0 in the Northwestern 4-A Conference.

Watauga had some early scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the game, but could not convert.

McDowell’s defense got better as the game went on and the Titans have not given up a goal all season.

McDowell scored all of its goals in the first half. Summer Crisp scored the first two, while Kelsey Detwiler added a goal just before halftime. McDowell held a 14-10 edge in shots.

Watauga returns to the field Friday at A.C. Reynolds.
