All-Northwestern 4-A
Conference: Pioneers excel in winter

Watauga’s winter athletes grabbed plenty of All-Northwestern 4-A Conference accolades, particularly in swimming.

Konrad Kosmala, who reached the state finals in the 100-meter freestyle, was named co-swimmer of the year.

Kosmala also reached the state finals in the 400 freestyle relay with Alden Mast, Pamornchart Manomayangoon and William Tsang.

Kosmala was all conference in those two events. He was also all all-league in the 200 freestyle. Watauga’s Justin Zumbo was All-NWC in the 100 backstroke, and Zumbo joined Dylan Russell, Trevon Jensen and Mast on the All-NWC team for the 200 medley relay.

Kosmala, Manomayangoon, Tsang, and Mast were also all-conference in the 200-meter relay.


Mast was also all league for the 500-meter freestyle and honorable mention for the individual medley. Tsang was honorable mention for the 100 butterfly.


Manomayangoon was honorable mention for the 100 backstroke.

In girls’ swimming, Watauga’s 200 medley relay team of Ingrid Forsyth, Hailey Middlebrook, Ayumi Tokushige and Laiken Williams were named all-conference.

Tokushige was honorable mention in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, Forsyth was honorable mention in the 200 freestyle and Watauga’s 400 relay team of Ruth Smith, Carrie Winkler, Crystal Tsang and Forsyth were also honorable mention.

Watauga coach David Gragg was named coach of the year for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.

In boys’ basketball, Jeff Newell, Watauga’s 6-foot-6 center, was named to the All-NWC team. Point guard Baine Martin was named honorable mention.

In girls’ basketball, Nicole Tesh, Watauga’s 6-1 center, was selected to be All-NWC. In wrestling, Nathan Cable was named all league in the heavyweight division. Ethan Henson, at 112 pounds, and Jacob Gilliam, at 152 pounds, were honorable mention.
