Hunters Helping

Kids plans banquet
By Melanie Davis

The Watauga chapter of Hunters Helping Kids will be holding a banquet on March 13 to raise money for local youth. Hunters Helping Kids is a national nonprofit organization that began in North Carolina with a mission of making it possible for every child interested in outdoor sports to have the opportunity to participate.

The local chapter of HHK is lead by president Doug McGuire. The chapter organizes an annual event, Kid's Day in August at Camp Sky Ranch on Winklers Creek Road. It consists of seven stations focusing on outdoor sports and activities.

The day includes information about trout fishing, hunter safety with certified instructors, archery, N.C. Highway Patrol demonstrations, Watauga County Sheriff's Office demonstrations, educational programs by N.C. Forest Service officers, construction of bird houses, a climbing wall and lunch is included.

McGuire said the event usually draws around 120 participants.

“We focus on being a good steward of the environment and encourage management and conservation of natural resources,” McGuire said.

The local chapter also helps children in the county with the financial costs associated with playing sports, such as equipment needs. This program allows those who would otherwise be unable to participate to join in team activities. The organization also helps families in need with medical costs for children.

Youth interested in hunting can also be provided the appropriate clothing and a firearm through HHK. Parental involvement is required for the hunting program.

The upcoming banquet is $15 admission and will be held at 6 p.m. at the Appalachian Christian School on N.C. 105 Bypass. The menu is barbecue chicken and pork, cole slaw, fries and a desert. All money raised at the banquet will stay in the county.
