Martha Blanche Greene Shoemake
Mrs. Martha Blanche Greene Shoemake, 87, of Junaluska Road, Boone, died Monday evening, March 2, 2009, at home. 
She was born in Watauga County, Feb. 21, 1922, a daughter of the late Barry Leonard and Maggie Watson Greene.
Mrs. Shoemake was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
She was a devoted and loving mother to seven children, Bobby Shoemake of Boone, Billy Shoemake of Deland, Fla., Betty Milligan and husband, Ronnie, of Seven Lakes, Margie Lewis and husband, Walt, of Boone, Mary Miller of Hickory, Deborah Sloan and husband Kenneth, of Jackson, N.J., and Patricia Shoemake of Morganton; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Barbara Snyder of Boone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hoye Edward Shoemake; two sisters, Ruth Calcutt and Belva Penley; and five brothers, John L. Greene, Russell Greene, Ralph Greene, Bland Greene, Bonard Greene and an infant, Blaine Greene.
Services were conducted Thursday morning at 11 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Kenny Newberry and Dr. Sonny Younce. Burial followed in the Watson Cemetery.

Anna Rosa Love Glenn
Mrs. Anna Rosa Love Glenn, 91, of Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation in Boone, and formerly of Rush Branch Road, Sugar Grove, died Monday morning, March 2, 2009, at Watauga Medical Center. 
She was born Jan. 29, 1918 in Watauga County, to Will and Hettie Ward Love.
Mrs. Glenn was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She retired from ASU Food Services and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathleen Glenn Ward of Boone; two sons, Steve Glenn and wife, Orbie, of Boone and Hubert Glenn and wife, Shirley, of Mountain City, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Mechele Lee Viale and husband, Joseph; and two great-grandchildren, Scott Duncan and Jocelyn Viale, all of Africa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Grover Glenn; one son, Baxter Ralph Glenn; one daughter, Jimmie Gail Glenn; one sister, Retha Greene; and her parents, Will and Hettie Ward Love.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Mike Townsend and the Rev. Arville Hardy. The body will lie in state at the chapel from 1 until 2 o’clock. Burial will follow in the Ward Cemetery in Sugar Grove.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 8:30 at Austin & Barnes.

Council L. Main
Mr. Council L. Main, 84, of 394 Vanderpool Road, Vilas, died Monday morning, March 2, 2009, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
He was born Feb. 6, 1925 in Watauga County, a son of the late Frank and Effie Roark Mains.
Mr. Main owned and operated Main Motor Sales for 60 years and served on the Board of Directors of Watauga Medical Center for 24 years. He was involved in the banking business for over 40 years, including First National Bank of Boone, Bank of North Carolina, NCNB, Nations Bank, and Bank of America. He had a lifetime of public service, and served on numerous committees and councils. Mr. Main was a Mason for over 55 years.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty Dean Main; two daughters, Dr. Sandra M. Phillips and husband, Aubrey, and Marjorie M. Hrozencik and husband, Robert, all of Vilas; two granddaughters, Jessica Whittaker and husband, Ronnie, of Zionville, and Candace Hrozencik of Vilas; one grandson, Aaron Hrozencik of Vilas; two sisters, Christine Wallace of Creston, and Paris Campbell of Rising Sun, Md.; one brother, R.J. Main and wife, Thelma, of Zionville; and one sister-in-law, Peggy Mains of Zionville. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Silvanus Mains.
Services will be conducted Thursday evening, March 5, 2009, at 7:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 6:00 until 7:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Derick Wilson and the Rev. Bill Warren. Private Masonic graveside rites and burial will follow Friday.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, from 5:00 until 9:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

James Clifford Woods Sr.
Mr. James Clifford Woods Sr., 59, of Mountain City, Tenn., went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, surrounded by his family and friends following a brave fight with cancer. 
He was born on Jan. 29, 1950, in Johnson County, Tenn., to the late Earl and Ruby Dyson Woods.
Mr. Woods loved working with wood. He was an employee at Mountain City Glove Plant for many years and had also worked at Watauga Medical Center for 16 years. He was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church and loved his church family dearly.
Survivors include the love of his life of 40 years, Margaret “Pat” May Woods; one daughter, Bobbie and husband, David Watson; one son, Jimmy and wife, Denise Woods; four grandchildren, Tiffani and Daniel Watson and Andy and Taylor Woods; one sister, Dot and husband, Ray Morefield; a special uncle and aunt, Andy and Helen Dyson, who were like his second parents; three aunts, Mary Woods, Katherine Dyson, all of Mountain City, Tenn., and Etoila Franklin, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one half-brother and three half-sisters; several special nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of wonderful friends; and Clifford’s special buddy, Rambo, his dog.
In addition to his parents, Clifford was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Bob Woods; two half-sisters; two nephews; one niece; and several aunts and uncles.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at First Freewill Baptist Church with the service to follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Billy Poe Jones and the Rev. Frank Woods officiating.
Music will be under the direction of Jerry Horne and the Fletcher Family.
Graveside Service and Interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2009 from the Donnelly Cemetery.
Active Pallbearers will be Active Pallbearers will be Nephews: Doug Tester, Tim Morris, Shane Golds, Keith Williams, Crane Newsome, Terry Slemp, Allen Slemp and Trampass Hodge.
Honorary pallbearers are grandsons, Andy Woods and Daniel Watson, and Bobby Dyson, cousin who was like a brother to Clifford.
The family will also receive friends at the residence, 956 Fox Hollow Road, Mountain City, Tenn.

Nellie Greene Greene
Mrs. Nellie Greene Greene, 90, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.
She was born June 11, 1918 in Wilkes County, a daughter of the late Floyd Washington Greene and Berdie Benge Greene. She was a homemaker and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Reba Watson and husband, Sid, of Deep Gap, and Marie Trivette and husband, Duane, of Fleetwood; five sons, Kenneth L. Greene and wife, Sadie, of Deep Gap, Clayton M. Greene of Fleetwood, Rev. Bobby C. Greene of Lenoir, Rex H. Greene and wife, Christine, and Ottis D. Greene and wife, Patty, all of Deep Gap; and two sisters, Doris Colvard and husband, Junior, of Hudson, and Coleen Nichols and husband, Raylee, of Lenoir; two brothers, Dick Greene and wife, Elizabeth, and Darvin Greene, all of Lenoir; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Reed Morris Greene; one son, Earl Greene; one granddaughter, Carolyn Greene; three brothers, Ernie, Brady, and Morris Greene; and two daughters-in-law, Linda Robbins Greene, and Aileene Miller Greene.
Services will be conducted Tuesday morning, March 3, 2009, at 11:00 o'clock, at Cornerstone Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Eric Proffitt, the. Rev. Sherrill Wellborn, the Rev. Randall Greene and the Rev. Rick Cornejo. Burial will follow in the Mount View Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, from 7:00 until 9:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the home of a daughter, Reba and Sid Watson, 1479 Wildcat Road, Deep Gap, N.C.

Ralph H. Ward
Mr. Ralph Herman Ward, 70, of Hickory, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 12, 1938 in Watauga County, the son of the late Edward and Gerdie McGuire Ward.
Mr. Ward was a faithful and supportive member of New Covenant Church of God. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Presnell.
Survivors include his wife, Sonja Ward of Hickory; children, Terry Ward of Connelly Springs, Larry Ward of Marion, Va., Cindy Presnell and husband, Kenny, of Granite Falls, Jerry Helms of Hickory, Jeff Helms of Hickory and Robin London and husband, Gene, of Newton; sister, Minnie Hand of Hickory; grandchildren, Chuck Ward, Della Ward, Jeremy Brooks, Josh Presnell, Michael Helms, Jody Helms and Gabrielle London; and seven great-grandchildren.
The celebration of life service was held on Saturday, Feb. 28, at New Covenant Church of God at 2 p.m. with Pastors Dennis Pitts, Tony Bolick and Jason Dillard officiating.
Burial followed at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family received friends prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. at the church.

Stella Triplett Watson
Mrs. Stella Elizabeth Triplett Watson, 91, of 185 North Star Lane, Deep Gap, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.
She was born July 22, 1917, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late June Vonley and Mattie Miller Triplett.
Mrs. Watson was a member of Corner Stone Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Honeycutt of Boone, Peggy Ward and husband, Allen, of Sugar Grove and Brenda Cornell and husband, Robert, of Deep Gap; three sons, Richard Watson and wife, Dorothy, Morris Watson and wife, Deborah, all of Lenoir; and Otis W. Watson, Jr. of Deep Gap; two sisters, Mildred Summerlin of Lenoir and Leano Miller of Triplett; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Washington Watson, Sr.; one daughter, Mary Sue Carlton Johnson; three grandsons, Tommy Matheson, C.R. Carlton and Chris Carlton; six brothers, Clemon, Joe, Hade, Oneil, Roby, and Elmer Triplett; and two sisters, Retha Triplett and Ellen Triplett; and a great-great-granddaughter, Bailey Lynn Tart.
Services will be conducted Monday, March 2, 2009, at 2:00 o'clock, at Corner Stone Baptist Church with the Rev. Eric Proffitt, the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn and the Rev. Harvey Presnell officiating. Arlie McCoy Winebarger
Mr. Arlie McCoy Winebarger, 94, of Montross, Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009.
He was a retired carpenter for George Hammond Construction, a World War II Army veteran, a member of Providence United Methodist Church, where he was a member of Providence United Church Men's Group and a Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He was also a member of the Carpenter Union Local #132 of Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his wife, Esther R. Winebarger; two sons, William Warren Winebarger and wife, Alice, of Oak Grove, and Michael Wayne Winebarger and wife, Daphne, of Warsaw; two daughters, Joyce W. Davis and husband, Jimmy, of Kinsale, and Judy W. Wilkins and husband, Ricky, of Montross; one brother, George Winebarger of Boone; three sisters, Margaret Miller and Martha Lookabill, both of Boone, and Lola Bowles and husband, Burl, of Lexington, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jason Corey Wilkins, Holly Rae Winebarger, Sarah Pryor Winebarger, and Jacob McCoy Winebarger; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted Saturday morning, Feb. 28, 2009, at 11:00 o'clock, at Providence United Methodist Church in Montross. Officiating was the Rev. John C. Ward, Jr. Burial followed in the Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery.
