Pioneers open tennis season

Watauga High School’s boys’ tennis team opened its 2009 season with a 9-0 drubbing of South Caldwell Wednesday.

The Pioneers (1-0, 1-0 NWC) did not lose a game in singles and just two games at No. 3 doubles. Watauga also won two exhibition doubles matches.

Steve Lake, Michael Smith, Kevin Ashline, Brian Geldmeier, Davis Roberts and Preston Stigall all posted singles victories for the Pioneers. Sam Littlejohn and Aaron Evans teamed to win one exhibition match and Chris Ludwig added a singles exhibition victory for Watauga.

Lake teamed with Smith to win at No. 1 singles, while Ashline teamed with Geldmeier to win at No. 2 doubles. Stigall and Ryan Schweitzer won at No. 3 doubles.

Watauga is scheduled to play Wednesday at McDowell and Thursday at Freedom.
