Brand named Second

Team All-Conference
From staff reports

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Appalachian State guard guard Kellen Brand, a junior, was named to the Southern Conference Sports Media Association’s all-conference squad, the league office announced on Wednesday.

The media panel also selected Davidson junior Stephen Curry as the Malcolm U. Pitt Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Ed Conroy of The Citadel was selected Coach of the Year, while Western Carolina’s Harouna Mutombo was named Freshman of the Year.

It is the first postseason honor for Brand, a High Point native who leads the team and ranks eighth in the SoCon with 15.0 points per game. He shoots 49.5 percent from the field, good for 13th in the conference.

Brand has scored 20 or more points nine times this season and averaged 22.2 points over six televised games in the regular season, including a career-best 31 points against Western Carolina on SportSouth. Brand needs 43 points to become Brand the 28th member of ASU’s 1,000-point club.

Brand and the Mountaineers open the SoCon Tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. against Georgia Southern in Chattanooga, Tenn.
