Spencer named Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C.— After helping her team to a nine point win over SoCon foe Georgia Southern last Saturday February 28 in the Mountaineers’ 2008-09 regular season finale, sophomore guard Brittney Spencer was named the Southern Conference’s women’s basketball Player of the Week announced the conference office Monday afternoon.

This is the second award for the Mountaineers this season and first for Spencer in her career. It is the first time since the 2006-07 campaign that more than one Mountaineer has earned the honor in a season.

The Virginia Beach, Va. native scored a career-high 20 points, including 16 in the second half against the Eagles over the weekend to help Appalachian capture its first win over Georgia Southern since 2007. Spencer went 6-of-11 from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe, including draining six clutch free throws down the stretch to lead the Mountaineers to their seventh SoCon win of the season.

Storm under-12 team wins Classic
The Watauga Storm under-12 boys basketball team won the 2008 Mitchell Roundball Classic last Saturday.

The Storm opened pool play last Friday with a 42-20 victory over the Mitchell Mountaineers. Matthew Lambert led the Storm with 13 points, Hunter Isaacs scored seven points followed by Hunter Shore and Zeb Speir with six points apiece. The next day, the Storm continued pool play by defeating the E. Yancey Bobcats 39-19. TJ Poulos led the Storm with nine points, while Speir and Isaacs pitched in seven points each. Shore finished with six points, while Harrison Cobb and Lambert each scored five points.

In the final pool play game the Storm beat the Wilkes Co. Scapdawgs 39-11. Isaacs led with 11 points followed by Lambert and Poulos with eight points each.

In bracket play the Storm once again faced Mitchell County and won again 40-15. Lambert again led the Storm with 10 points, Poulos chipped in eight more, and Kenan Ozdemir, Shore and Speir each scored six points apiece, Kory Phillips and Isaacs scored two points each. In the finals, the Storm defeated E. Yancey 39-10. Lambert scored 10 points to lead the Storm. Shore finished with nine pints, Isaacs scored eight points, Speir added six points, and Cobb and Phillips pitched in two points apiece.
