Sports update: Mountaineers roll past Mocs

Commentary: Athletes of spring start next week
Another season closes, another opens up. It will be less than one week, six days to be exact, until the spring sports at Watauga will begin after the final winter sport is over. The boys’ golf team starts it all off Monday with a tournament at Oakwoods Golf Club in Wilkesboro. Watauga’s boys’ tennis team begins play March 3 at home against South Caldwell, then plays at McDowell on March 4 and at Freedom on March 5.

 

Too much Tabor
WINSTON-SALEM - This was supposed to be somewhat of an easy victory for Mount Tabor's girls' basketball team. Just host, and then beat Watauga in the first round of the state 4-A playoffs and move on.

Rhein signs with ASU
Appalachian State volleyball coach Matt Ginipro announced the addition of sophomore outside hitter Kelly Rhein on Wednesday. She will join the team for the fall season after playing one season at Virginia.

Mountaineers host league champ Elon
Now that the two midweek games are out of the way, Appa-lachian State can turn its complete focus on one of the biggest three-game series of the young season.

The question that may linger at the Southern Conference Tournament is: Is it better to earn a first-round bye and play just three days, or is it better to play the first night, get the opening-night jitters out of a team’s system, but risk playing on tired legs on that fourth day?

GREENSBORO - Appalachian State women’s basketball team was unable to keep pace with host UNC Greensboro and lost 74- 60 to the Spartans Monday.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State softball player Katie Boyd was named Southern Conference Player of the Week and Ashley Stubbs was named Pitcher of the week for their performances during the week of Feb. 16-22 the conference office announced Monday.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Appalachian State won the first two matches of the night, but Liberty won six out of the last eight matches to pull away with a 24-18 win Monday night.

Stubbs tosses no-hitter
CONWAY, S.C. - Appalachian State’s Ashley Stubbs threw a no-hitter and added two hits and three RBI’s to lead the Mountaineers to a 10-0 win over Western Carolina in the final game of the Kickin’ Chicken Classic this weekend at Coastal Carolina.

The Blowing Rock boys’ team won the middle school basketball championship with a 44-32 win over the Mabel Mustangs Wednesday. Blowing Rock (11-2) got 16 points from Rhyne Jones, while Mable (11-3) got 12 points from Ben Margolis.

ASU slips past Spartans
GREENSBORO - A.J. Highsmith nailed a 3-pointer from the left corner to give Appalachian State a 70-69 lead with 27 seconds left and the Mountaineers held on for the win as UNC Greensboro’s final shot fell short Thursday.
