WHS blasts A.C. Reynolds 85-51
When Watauga made the trip to Asheville a week ago, the Pioneers had no intention of the Rockets returning to Boone. The plan was to beat A.C. Reynolds last Monday, follow with a win at home against Alexander Central the following night, and then host South Caldwell the next week in the first round of the Northwestern 4-A Conference playoffs.

ASU baseball season opens
Appalachian State baseball coach Chris Pollard has built high expectations for the Mountaineers in 2009. He’ll find out quickly if his team has a chance of meeting those goals early in the season.

Storm 13-under wins tourney
The Watauga Storm 13-under boys basketball team won the Kingsport Winter Jam Basketball Tournament the weekend of Feb. 6-8. They finished with a 4-1 record over the weekend in a round-robin tournament format.

95 Avalanche wins in Matthews
The 95 High Country Avalanche Boys won the Matthews Invitational with a 4-0 record.

Pioneers exit NWC tourney

ASHEVILLE -Watauga’s girls’ basketball team stayed with A.C. Reynolds for a while, but could not keep up with the Rockets forever and fell 70-56 in the first round of the Northwestern 4-A Conference Tournament.

App State players honored
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State first baseman David Towarnicky is a first-team selection and pitcher Matt Andress is a second-team honoree on the Southern Conference’s preseason baseball all-conference teams, the league office announced on Thursday. Additionally, the SoCon’s coaches and media picked Appalachian to place fifth in the 11-team title race this spring.


Chattanooga belts ASU
It’s never good to wake a sleeping giant from its slumber. Appalachian State found out first hand when it comes to waking the Southern Conference’s women’s basketball version of a giant.


Gentry named new Suns coach
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Appalachian State alumus Alvin Gentry replaced fired head coach Terry Porter of the NBA's Phoenix Suns on Sunday night.

Things did not go so well for Watauga’s basketball teams the last time they lined up against A.C. Reynolds. Over the next two days, Watauga’s teams will play A.C. Reynolds in the first rounds of the Northwestern 4-A Conference Tournament.

Appalachian State women’s basketball team held a team under 60 points for the third time this season, but it was not enough as Samford beat the Mountaineers 59-47 at the Holmes Center Saturday.

GREENVILLE - In a match that saw five singles matches go to three sets, Appalachian State’s men’s tennis team was able to pull out a 4-3 win over previously unbeaten East Carolina.

Citadel survives scare from ASU
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Isaac Butts tipped in a missed shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, but Cameron Wells scored six of his game-high 30 in the extra period as The Citadel took a 78-73 win.

Citadel edges App State
Appalachian State’s wrestling team split five matches apiece with The Citadel, but the Bulldogs earned two major decisions to come away with a 17-15 win Sunday afternoon at Varsity Gym.
