Playing East Burke to stay in second place in the Northwestern 4-A Conference, Watauga got 33 points from Jeff Newell and 12 more from Will Koppenhaver and beat the Cavaliers 77-69 in overtime Friday night at East Burke’s gym.

As the Obama administration touts its economic stimulus package, the White House has released impact statements that suggest the plan will create more than 100,000 jobs in North Carolina over the next two years even as local officials plan to use the anticipated funds.

ASU inks 14 on national signing day
Should Appalachian State quarterbacks Armanti Edwards or DeAndre Presley get injured in 2009, there will no shortage of incoming freshman to replace them. During national signing day Wednesday, Appalachian State signed no less than five players who played quarterback last year.

Unconscious woman found in Seven Devils
An apparent assault left a woman seriously injured in Seven Devils Tuesday morning. According to the Seven Devils Police Department, an as-yet unidentified woman was discovered in a vehicle at the Wilco gas station at the intersection of N.C. 105 and Seven Devils Road. The unconscious woman was discovered at around 6 a.m. with a head injury and is believed to have been there for about two hours. The woman was transported to Watauga Medical Center for treatment. No additional information on her condition was available as of presstime. Sugar Grove Slim’s prediction
“Aargh! Eight more weeks of winter.” So says the High Country’s very own posthumously prognosticating groundhog, Sugar Grove Slim, this year decked in pirate garb with the theme, “Woodchucks of the Caribbean.” On Feb. 2, Groundhog Day aficionado Jim Sparger conducted their annual visit to offices and restaurants in the High Country. Each year, the duo brings flowers to area workers and delivers Groundhog Day tidings.

Watauga schools again score above state average
Watauga County schools received their report cards Thursday, and though the state assigns no grades, the county results show the system is performing above the state average.
Boone Police reports:
Jan. 21 — Larceny was reported at a business at 9:15 a.m. on the 1300 block of N.C. 105. Two snowboards were reported stolen from First Tracks.
Watauga sheriff’s reports:
Jan. 19 — Lora Lynn Bridges, 43, of 5508 Old U.S. 421, Zionville, was charged with driving while impaired. She is scheduled to appear in district court on Feb. 17.
