Ola Coffey Church

Mrs. Ola Coffey Church, 79, of 533 Ransom Street, Blowing Rock, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
Survivors include two daughters, Diana Church Helms of Stallings, and Deborah Kay Church Fahlstrom of Fairfield, Calif.; two grandsons, Charles Arnold Fahlstrom and Todd Matthew Fahlstrom, both of Fairfield, Calif.; one brother, Everette Coffey of Blowing Rock; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold "Red" Church; her father and mother, Fred and Mary Octavia Loudermelt Coffey; one sister, Mary Hazel Miles; and two brothers, George and Roy Coffey.
Mrs. Church was a devoted Christian who loved her Lord.
Services were held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Shew and the Rev. Dean Coffey officiating. Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family received friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.

Donald Eston Cox
Mr. Donald Eston Cox passed away Jan. 21, 2009, in Navarre, Fla.
He was born Sept. 14, 1934, in Spruce Pine, N.C.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Joan Kochan Cox; his daughter, Linda Cox Lewis and husband, Jack, of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; two sons, Michael Jeffrey Cox and wife, Betty, of Blowing Rock, N.C. and Christopher Cox of Tulsa, Okla.; grandsons, Stephen Jeffrey Cox of Blowing Rock, James Cox of Tulsa, Okla., and Blake and David Cress of Jackson, Miss.; and one granddaughter, Samantha Cox of Tulsa, Okla.
Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine, N.C. The family will receive friends at 12:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Gladys Greene Gragg
Mrs. Gladys Greene Gragg, 96, of 4705 N.C. Highway 194 North, Boone, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009 at Glenbridge Health Care.
She was born Sept. 8, 1912 to the late Walter Greene and Celia Ellen Greene.
Mrs. Gragg was a retired cattle farmer, an elementary school teacher and a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy Ann Gragg; a grandson, Michael Jerome Gragg, both of the home; a sister-in-law, Doreatha Greene of Boone; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Gragg; her father and mother, Walter Harrison Greene and Celia Ellen Greene; and three brothers, Forrest, John and Loyd Greene.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, at Meat Camp Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mike Townsend and the Rev. Herbert McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Gary Dan Hatley
Mr. Gary Dan Hatley, 55, of 154 Sarah Anna Drive, Johnson City, Tenn., passed away Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 20, 2009, in the Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a Carter County native. Mr. Hatley was employed by GDS Waste Management in Boone, N.C., for 22 years. He was a member of the Sugar Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother and step-father with whom he made his home, Kathleen Potter Hatley Hodges and Roy Reece Hodges; four sisters, Betty Hatley of Johnson City, Tenn.; Glenda Smith of Boone, N.C.; Kathy Jo Phillips of Vilas, N.C.; and Janice Shephard of Elizabethton, Tenn.; two brothers, Randy Hatley and Denny Hatley; two grandchildren, Dustin and McKinsey Hatley; several nieces, nephews and uncles.
He was preceded in death by a son, Chris; his father, Clifford “Buckeye” Hatley; and his best friend and brother, Michael.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services were conducted Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ray Greene officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Lakeview Cemetery.
Active pallbearers are Jim Phillips, Travis Phillips, Donnie Fletcher, Buddy Bowling, Shaun Shepard and Chad Allen.
The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Anne Hagaman Klevinski
Mrs. Anne Hagaman Klevinski, 90, of Clemmons, passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, Ga.
She was born May 4, 1918 in Watauga County, to Fred Council and Beulah Shell Hagaman.
Mrs. Klevinski was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church and an active member of WMU. She was also a member of Clemmons Development Council and Clemmons Homemakers Association.
Survivors include two sons, Edward H. Klevinski, Jr. and wife, Sami, of Clemmons and Mark S. Klevinski and wife, Dianne, of Tobaccoville; two granddaughters, Lisa Talley and Lita Crockett, both of Winston-Salem; and three sisters, Sue Harmon of Boone, Lucy Holland of Bowersville, Ga. and Carolyn Adams of Sugar Grove.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Edward Herman Klevinski; and a daughter, Marion Janice Klevinski.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at Clemmons First Baptist Church with Dr. Robby Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel.

Jack Cobb Sr.
Mr. John Leiston “Jack” Cobb, Sr., 77, of 191 Longleaf Drive, Spartanburg, S.C., died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009.
He was born in Spartanburg, a son of the late James Wiley and Ethel Greenewald Cobb.
Mr. Cobb was a graduate of The Citadel, class of 1952 where he played varsity golf and basketball. Upon graduation he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps where he served as a fighter pilot. Mr. Cobb was a Southern Conference Football Official and enjoyed coaching little league football and baseball.
He served on the Spartanburg County Commission for Higher Education from 1967-1991 and was also a member of the Civitan Club of Spartanburg and the Spartanburg Jaycees. Mr. Cobb enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing, and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a past president of the Country Club of Spartanburg and was co-owner of Greenewald's Men's Clothing Store.
Survivors include his companion of 15 years, Mary Lib Hamilton; two daughters, Nancy and her husband, David Briggs, and their children, Karen, Cam, Abbie, and Ryan of Spartanburg; Ethel and her husband, McKiever Hunter, and their children, Maggie and Kiever of Boone, N.C.; two sons, Jack and his wife, Libby Cobb, Jr., and their children, Dylan, Max, and Savannah of Spartanburg; Ned Cobb and his son, Zach, of Cookeville, Tenn.; and a brother, James D. Cobb of Lake Bowen.
A graveside service was held Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by Pastor T. Lee Bryant.

Emma Jean Mincey
Ms. Emma Jean Mincey, 59, of Boone, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born June 25, 1949, in Orange County, a daughter of the late Ike Mincey and Lena Cannon.
Ms. Mincey was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Bryant “Bubba” Lloyd and wife, Julie, of Harrisburg and Robert Lloyd of Harriman, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Nichole Lloyd of Greenville, Tenn. and Amber Lloyd of Harrisburg; two grandsons, Christian Lloyd and Eddie Lloyd, both of Harrisburg; her ex-husband, Gary Hollars and step-son, Eric Hollars, both of Boone; three half-sisters, June Cannon of Boone, Paula Mincey of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Carmi McAdams of Paris, Tenn.; two half-brothers, Billy Cannon and wife, Linda, of Lenoir and Paul Mincey of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one aunt, Ruth Cornett of Boone; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was loved by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Ike Mincey and Lena Cannon; and a brother, Craig Mincey.
A memorial service will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.

Ray Edward Osborne
Mr. Ray Edward Osborne, 77, of Martin Lane, Boone, died Saturday morning, Jan. 17, 2009, at the James H. Quillen Veteran’s Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn.
He was born Sept. 8, 1931 in Fig, N.C., a son of the late Edward and Beatrice Farmer Osborne.
Mr. Osborne was a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict. He attended Appalachian State University and was a Quality Control Engineer.
Surviving are his wife, Janice Osborne; four sons, Edward Osborne and wife, Vicki, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., R. S. Osborne of Foscoe, Alan Osborne and wife, Lori, of Valdese, and Joel Osborne of Boone; two grandchildren, Elyse Osborne of Valdese and Steven Wilson of Palm Beach, Fla.; and two sisters, Jo Hughes of Boone and Ella Dougherty of Springfield, Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Amy Jo Wilson.
Memorial services for close friends and family will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Emily Vandenberg Priest
Mrs. Emily Vandenberg Priest, 93, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, died Thursday evening, Jan. 15, 2009, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.
She was born April 25, 1915, in Rochester, N.Y., a daughter of the late Henry and Louella Collamer Vandenberg. She was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include one son, Al Priest and wife, Cindy, of Banner Elk; four granddaughters, Kimberly Graham and husband, Daniel, of Hickory; Linda Maier of Jacksonville, Fla.; Laurie Schnitzer of Honeoye Falls, N.Y.; and Christina Whelden of Jacksonville, Fla.; one grandson, Daryl Priest and wife, Sheri, of Hickory; one great-granddaughter, Madison Graham of Hickory; and a great-grandson, Devon Anthony of Jacksonville, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Priest; and a daughter, Diane Maier.
A private memorial service will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Glenbridge Health Care Center Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Donnie Tester.

Mrs. Lessie Anne Rhodes, 69, of Chapel Hill, passed away at UNC Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009.
Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Dr. J Linn Mackey; her two children, Tanya King Popelars and David King; son-in-law, Craig Popelars; step-children, Karee Mackey and Alisha Wilson; her mother, Lela Nelson Rhodes; sisters, Priscilla Schmitt, Dr. Katherine Henderson; a grandchild, Madeleine Popelars; step-grandchildren, Jonathan Teague, Jacob, Jacey, Kaitlyn and Ryan Wilson, and many loving friends.

Daniel Everett Scott
Daniel Everett Scott, 17, of White Dogwood Lane, Boone, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2009, at his home.
He was born April 29, 1991 in Watauga County. Daniel was a member of Boone United Methodist Church. He was a senior at Watauga High School and was an avid music lover and musician.
Daniel was a beloved son and brother to his parents, David Jeffrey Scott of Boone and Lana Jean Miller Scott of Boone; two brothers, Jerry Scott Cline and friend Anthony Justice of Charlotte and Matthew David Scott of the home; two sisters, Christy Cline Halbedel and husband, Joe, of Indian Trail and Jana Cline Griebel and husband, Jeff, of Charlotte. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, Ray and Elsie K. Scott of Kinston; his maternal grandmother, Alice P. Miller of Catawba; and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Everett Lee Miller.
Daniel will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Jan. 17, 2009, at 3 o’clock at the Boone United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. John Fitzgerald, the Rev. A. J. Thomas, Dr. George Naff and the Rev. Dr. Tim Smith.
The family received friends Saturday afternoon from 1 until 3 o’clock, prior to services, at the church.

Ms. Peggy Thomas, 59, of 300 Enola Road, Morganton, died Friday night, Jan. 16, 2009, in Morganton.
She was born August 13, 1949, in Iredell County, a daughter of the late Walter and Pauline Bingham Thomas.
Ms. Thomas was a member of Boone United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Patricia Thomas Waldrop and husband, Hubert, of Inman, S.C.; one niece, Melinda Margaret Waldrop of Newport News, Va.; one nephew, Mark Thomas Waldrop and wife, Lynn, and daughters, Amelia and Audrey, of Simpsonville, S.C.; one aunt, Jennie Lee Deal of Boone; and also a number of cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Walter and Pauline Bingham Thomas.
Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.
