Helen Colvard Gill
Mrs. Helen Colvard Gill, 72, of Statesville, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
She was born July 16, 1936, in Watauga County, the daughter of the late Hardy Lee and Rosie Opal Ham Colvard.
Mrs. Gill was a member of Front Street Baptist Church where she had taught the two and three-year-old Sunday school class for many years. She was last employed with the Iredell Council on Aging.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas “Tommy” G. Gill, Jr.; a daughter, Tamalynne Harris (Dennis) of Statesville; two grandchildren, Richard Teague, Jr. (Kimberly) and Amanda Rose Harris; two great-grandchildren, Richard Teague III and Hayden Jolene Teague; and special friends, Tom and family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Lee Gill.
A funeral service celebrating Mrs. Gill’s life will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Front Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Riddle officiating. Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service and at other times will be at the residence on Eufola Road.

Bennie Clay Harmon
Mr. Bennie Clay Harmon, 60, of Old US Hwy 421, Zionville, died Monday evening, Dec. 29, 2008 at Watauga Medical Center. 
He was born Feb. 14, 1948 in Caldwell County, to Adie and Glady Hicks Harmon.
Mr. Harmon was employed by the Town of Boone Sanitation Department before his health forced his early retirement. He was a member of Sandy Flat Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie Mae Ward Harmon; four daughters, Amy Adcox and husband, Chris, of Banner Elk, Arlene Harmon of Elizabethton, Tenn., Melissa Harmon of Johnson City, Tenn. and Karen Harmon of the home; one son, Benjamin Clay Harmon and wife, April, of Zionville; six grandchildren; four brothers, Marshall Harmon and Lee Harmon and wife, Betty, all of Vilas, Houston Harmon and wife, Margie, of Cove Creek, and Ernest Harmon and wife, Jean, of Hickory; and three sisters, Dare Ward of Boone, Sue Ward and husband, J. B., of Elk Park and Linda Kelley and husband, George, of Lenoir. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Grady Harmon.
Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Sandy Flat Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Max West. The family received friends Thursday from noon until 2 o’clock, prior to services, at the church. Burial followed in the Matney-Liberty Community Cemetery.

Madge Isaacs Campbell
Ms. Madge Isaacs Campbell, 86, of 1091 Tater Hill Road, Zionville, died Monday afternoon, Dec. 29, 2008, at her home.
She was born Dec. 18, 1922 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Smith and Myrtle Reece Isaacs.
Ms. Campbell was a retired employee of Appalachian State University and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane Campbell Dandy and husband, Willie, and Karen Campbell Pelicano and husband, Lee, both of Zionville; three sons, Doug Campbell of the home, Gary Campbell and wife, Kathleen, and Russell Campbell and wife, Lovely, all of Zionville; two sisters-in-law, Maude Isaacs and Dare Isaacs, both of Zionville; a special caregiver, Judy Dollar; and her hospice caregiver, Laurie Bura. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond, Dennis, Arnie, and Lloyd Isaacs; four sisters, Mae Beach, Ella Greer, Wilma Greer, and Madeline Watson, and an infant sister, Dena Isaacs.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Thursday morning, Jan. 1, 2009, at 11:00 o'clock, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. David Lunceford.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the home, 1091 Tater Hill Road, Zionville.

Hillard Charles Anthony
Mr. Hillard Charles Anthony, 101, of Vale, N.C., died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Hospice of Catawba Valley & Palliative Care Center.
He was born August 16, 1907, in Lincoln County, N.C., to the late Mark Anthony and Mary Jane Workman Anthony.
Mr. Anthony was retired from Broyhill Furniture Company as a sander and was also a farmer.
He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church of Vale.
Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Wise of Vale, N.C. and Betty Hodges of Boone; a step-daughter, Myra Huss of Vale, N.C.; a step-son, Dale Glenn of Rutherford College; a brother, M.F. Anthony of High Point, N.C.; a sister, Elene Brindel of Drexel; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ila Grigg Anthony; his second wife, Ruth Hartman Anthony; a son, Charles Anthony; five brothers, Carlo, Boyce, Coleman, Evan and Grady Anthony; two sisters, Irene Shull and Della Norman; and a great-grandson, Mitchell Fisher.
Services were conducted Saturday morning, Dec. 27, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. William Kanupp and the Rev. Harold Whitener officiating.
Burial followed in the Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Leona Lusk Bell
Mrs. Mary Leona Lusk Bell, 77, of NC Highway 194 South, Banner Elk, the Valle Crucis community, died Saturday morning, Dec. 27, 2008 at Cannon Hospital in Linville.
She was born Jan. 22, 1931 in Watauga County to Walter Gerald and Martha Teaster Lusk.
Mrs. Bell was a member of Clark’s Creek Baptist Church. Before retirement, she was employed by Hanes Hosiery and Baxter Health Care Corporation.
Survivors include one son, Kent Bell and wife, Lisa, of Newland; her step-daughter, Donna Bell Eller and husband, Joe, of Boone; two grandsons, Aaron and Austin Bell, both of Newland; and one sister, Carolyn Townsend and husband, Gilbert, of Hudson. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Lymon Bell; two brothers, Ray and Fred Lusk; and two sisters, Hazel Hicks and Pansy McGuire.
Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Clark’s Creek Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Mike Townsend and the Rev. Bill Warren. The body will lie in state at the church from noon until 1 o’clock. Burial will follow in the Liberty-Matney Community Cemetery.

Hattie Wheeler Cox
Mrs. Hattie Wheeler Cox, 92, of 4809 Elk Creek Road, the Triplett community, Deep Gap, died Sunday morning, Dec.28, 2008, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.
She was born June 23, 1916 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Roxie Rhymer Wheeler.
Mrs. Cox was a homemaker and a member of Mount Ephriam Baptist Church in Deep Gap.
Survivors include two sons, Dewitt Cox and wife, Barbara, and James Cox and wife, Linda, all of the Triplett community; one step-daughter, Mrs. Valeria White of Lenoir; one granddaughter, Michelle Wall and husband, Sandy, of Newbern; two grandsons, Ronnie Cox of Deep Gap, and Steve Cox and wife, Brenda, of Mountain City, Tenn.; three step-granddaughters, Jeraldean Bentley and husband, Ray, of Lenior, Carolyn Burroughs and husband, Jim, of Monroe, and Erma Holman and husband, David, of Statesville; and two sisters, Doris Townsend of Taylorsville, and Wilma Jean Greene of Fleetwood. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brady Thomas Cox; two granddaughters, Barbara Anita Cox, and Anita Marie Cowan; five sisters, Judy Wheeler, Lola Lail, Francis Hartley, Faye Greene, and Pearl Wheeler; and five brothers, Richard Wheeler, Comodore Wheeler, Don Wheeler, Ronda Wheeler, and Jimmy Wheeler.
Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 30, 2008, at 2:00 o'clock, at Mount Ephriam Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 12:30 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Chuck Morefield and the Rev. Tim Dockery. Burial will follow in the Rhymer Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00 o'clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Mrs. Louise H. Fickling, 83, of Blowing Rock, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 23, 2008, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
Survivors include one son, Al Fickling and wife, Camelia, of Boone; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Jimmie Ann Wright of Holly Springs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert "Buck" M. Fickling; and one sister, Jean Hurst Williams.

Julene Crews Greene
Mrs. Julene Crews Greene, 43, of Goshen Terrace, Wilkesboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at her home.
She was born Oct. 7, 1965 in Wilkes County, to Walter Grady and Ima Lee Gentry Crews.
Mrs. Greene worked as a respiratory therapist at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Joven Greene; one daughter, Emily E. Greene of the home; two sons, Miguel R. Greene of North Wilkesboro and Monte R. Greene of the home; and one brother, Rhilip R. Crews and wife, Janice, of Purlear.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Dec. 27, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Fellman Cheek and the Rev. Joey Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Betty Jean Hicks
Mrs. Betty Jean Hicks, 68, of Lenoir, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 at her residence.
She was born in Watauga County, May 16, 1940, a daughter of the late Ira and Eliza Presnell.
Surviving are her husband, Bennie Edison Hicks; one daughter, Susan Coffey and husband, Harold, of Lenoir; one granddaughter, Ariel Coffey; and one sister, Ruby Dean Presnell and husband, Odell, of Sugar Grove.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil and Lee Presnell.
Services will be conducted Wednesday morning, Dec. 31, 2008, at 11 o’clock at Pendry’s Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Rudy Hayes. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Presnell Cemetery in Sugar Grove.

James Arthur Nelson
Mr. James Arthur Nelson, 90, of Appalachian Brian Estates, Boone, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
He was born June 30, 1918 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His early years were spent in Boston, Mass. Upon entering the Army Air Corps, Mr. Nelson served in the North African and European Campaigns. He obtained his BS in engineering from Northeastern University. Mr. Nelson later obtained an MS in Industrial Engineering and taught at North Carolina State University.
Mr. Nelson served as Assistant Personnel Director for Carolina Power and Light in Raleigh. In 1955, Nelson became Personnel Manager for the Douglas Aircraft Company in Charlotte. This launched a twenty-five year career in the aerospace industry, culminating in a promotion to Corporate Director of Personnel and Labor Relations, in the home office of McDonnell Douglas Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri.
In 1974, Mr. Nelson retired to Boone. His passion for teaching and extensive corporate management experience, led to a faculty appointment in the College of Business at Appalachian State University (1974-1985). Nelson co-authored “Labor Relations in China” with Dr. John Reider. In 1986, the Board of Trustees for Appalachian State University approved faculty emeritus status for Mr. Nelson.
Over the span of his career, Nelson held numerous civic leadership positions.
Governor Sanford appointed Nelson to the first statewide bi-racial committee in North Carolina, The North Carolina Good Neighbor Council. He was president of Family and Children’s Services in Charlotte, president of Charlotte Council on Alcoholism, president of Charlotte Personnel Director’s Association, and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Watauga Opportunities, Boone, N.C.
Parallel to Mr. Nelson’s successful career was his deep love and devotion to his wife and family, his relentless pursuit of knowledge, and a strong affinity for the North Carolina mountains.
Survivors include one son, Bruce F. Nelson of Hillsborough; two daughters, Ms. Mardy Brown of Boone, and Mrs. Jan MacInnis and husband, Robert, of Ontario, Canada; two granddaughters, Bonnie Schumacher and husband, Erik, of Whitsett, N.C., and Miss Lyn Nelson of Hillsborough; and two grandsons, Sean Nelson MacInnis, and Robert James MacInnis, both of Ontario.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla Fletcher Nelson; his father and mother; one brother; and one sister.
Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 30, 2008, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Pastor Jeffery Sweeney. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, from 7:00 until 8:30, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the home of a daughter, Mardy Brown, 180 Chase Hill Drive, Boone.

Beulah Farthing ‘Boots’ Parker
Mrs. Beulah Farthing “Boots” Parker, 81, of Boone, died Monday morning, Dec. 22, 2008, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
She was born in Watauga County, and was raised by her grandparents, the late Joseph and Ida Farthing, in the Beaver Dam community.
“Boots” was an expert restauranteur, having managed six restaurants for the May Company. In Liberia West Africa, she headed both the United Trading Company and the firestone Guest House, where she entertained heads of state and other dignitaries from around the world. She had business interests in Canada and abroad. She was honored as an outstanding humanitarian by numerous organizations in New York, Virginia, Ohio and Florida. Her accomplishments are noted in Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
Surviving are five daughters, Jackie Parker of Moss Beach, Calif., Frankie DeLabarre of South Hampton, N.Y., Kym Peacock of Leesburg, Va., Liza Parker of Napa, Calif., and Penny Greenbaur of Grapevine, Tex.; and one sister, Mildred Farthing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Dale Parker.
Memorial services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating was Mr. Stacy Eggers.

Stella Isaacs Perry
Mrs. Stella Isaacs Perry, 95, of Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation Center, Boone, N.C., formerly of Vilas, N.C., passed away peacefully with members of her loving family by her side. 
She was born in Watauga County, Oct. 17, 1913, to the late William and Vertie Green Isaacs.
Mrs. Perry was a devoted homemaker and farmer’s wife. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Zionville and enjoyed attending the services as long as her health prevailed.
Survivors include three daughters, Rose Anna P. Hayes and husband, Elliott, of Vilas and Mayodan, Virginia Kallam of Mount Airy, and Judy P. South and husband, Dean, of Vilas; four sons, J.W. Perry and wife, Margie, of Killeen, Tex., Ernest Perry of Vilas, Harold Perry of Murfreesboro, Michael Perry and wife, Mary Ann, of Vilas; 14 grandchildren, Kenneth Hayes, Randy Hayes, Sue Presley, Eric Perry, Eve Mason, Connie Griffith, Tammy Shoemaker, Kim Washington, Torey Perry, Elizabeth Dickerson, Gary South, Ann Stansberry, Anthony South, and Thomas Michael Perry; 20 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Bryan, Dusty, Kalynn, Nikki, Alex, Nicholas, Christopher, Megan, Sam, Addie, Cade, Gabrielle, Austin, Craig, Brett, Stephen, Drew, Savannah, Sawyer, and Tenisha; two great-great-grandchildren, Anna Bell Hayes, and Cayden Hayes; two brothers, Dayton Isaacs of Zionville, and Clayton Isaacs of Elk Park; one sister, Anna Church of Morganton; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Mitchell of Zionville, and Mrs. Clydie Isaacs of Boone; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, four brothers, and two sisters, Mrs. Perry was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Thomas Melton Perry; and a grandson, Johnny Lee Perry.
Services were held Monday morning, Dec. 29, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Zionville, N.C. with the Rev. Steve Leashomb and the Rev. Elliott Hayes conducting the service with interment to follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Edward F. ‘Edd’ Reist
Mr. Edward F. “Edd” Reist, 78, of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Sugar Grove, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008.
He was born Dec. 22, 1930, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Jay Reist, Sr. and Grace Rustenholtz Reist.
Mr. Reist was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was employed at the KVP Paper Company in Kalamazoo, the Kalamazoo City Police Department, the City of Lake Worth, Florida Police Department and the US Postal Service in West Palm Beach. He was a 28 year member of the Jupiter Elks Lodge, Jupiter, Fla., and in 1985 was the Exalted Ruler of that Lodge. In l996 he and his wife established Boone Heavenly Chocolates and Gifts and later purchased Dancy’s Shoe Store, both in Boone.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Laura St. Martin Reist; two daughters, Lauren Renkert and husband, Sam, and Linda Holder and husband, James, all of Sugar Grove; two sons, David Reist and wife, Kellie, of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Michael Reist of Port St. Lucie, Fla; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, Samuel Renkert V, wife Bridgette and daughter Sabrina of Raleigh, Emily Critcher, husband Tracy and their sons, Cooper and Finley Critcher and Sara Coffey, husband Shawn and their children Rylan, Tyler and Cadyn, and Jonathon Zuback and wife Angela and Shaun Holder, all of Boone, Henry Zukback III of West Palm Beach, Fla., Ashley and Colin Reist of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Matthew Reist of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two brothers, Robert Reist, Sr. and wife, Nell, and Richard Reist and wife, Beverly; and one sister, Elaine DeShon and husband, Robert, all of Kalamazoo, Mich. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Jay Reist.

Jimmy Dale Roberts
Mr. Jimmy Dale Roberts, 40, of 372 Brown's Chapel Crest, Boone, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008.
He was born Jan. 2, 1968 in Johnson City, Tenn., a son of Jerry Lee Roberts and Judy Bennett Roberts Hyduk.
Mr. Roberts was owner and operator of Yard Art Landscaping Company and a member of Greenway Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife, Lisa Greer Roberts; one daughter, Jamie Roberts, and one son, Jordon Roberts, both of Johnson City, Tenn.; one step-daughter, Tiffany Presnell, and two step-sons, Jared Presnell, and Nick Presnell, all of Boone; his step-mother, Mary Lynn Roberts of Charleston, S.C.; step-father, Bobby Hyduk of Jonesboro, Tenn.; one sister, Debbie Higgins and husband, Joe; one brother, Dean Roberts and wife, Kathy, all of Jonesboro; one step-sister, Bonnie Vogler of Charleston, S.C.; his grandmother, Ruby Nichols of Charleston; his step-grandmother, Edna Grant of Charleston; his father and mother-in-law, Rev. Burl and Linda Greer of Boone; one sister-in-law, Sharray Greer of Boone; and one brother-in-law, Myron Greer of Charlotte. He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services were conducted Saturday morning, Dec. 27, 2008, at 11:00 o'clock, at Greenway Baptist Church. Officiating were Dr. David Luster and the Rev. John Padgett. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
