Murder suspect transported back to Watauga
The prime suspect in the Dec. 22 murder of Jimmy Roberts is back in Watauga County. John Richard Gray, 28, was arrested at a hotel in Rochelle, Ill., after a standoff lasting several hours. On Wednesday, a Boone Police officer and a State Bureau of Investigations officer transported Gray back to Watauga County to face the murder charge.

Crimestoppers: Two cars stolen and found; home and vehicle entered

Watauga County Crimestoppers requests the public's help in identifying the person(s) responsible for the following crimes: On Dec. 21 a 1994 Buick Park Avenue was reported missing from a residence located on New River Heights Road. The 1994 Buick Park Avenue was recovered in the Triplett area of Watauga County on Dec. 23. On Dec. 30, a 1951 Chevrolet truck was reported missing from a residence located on New River Heights Road. The truck was recovered on Charlie Hollars Road in Boone on Dec. 30. On Dec. 30, a residence located on New River Hills Road was entered and a 2009 Honda Civic was entered, looked through and an attempt was made to remove the vehicle from the residence. Anyone with information on these crimes or any other crime is asked to call Crimestoppers at 828-268-6959. All information will be kept confidential. Crimestoppers pays rewards for information, which leads to arrests; recovery of stolen property; seizure of drugs and the location of wanted persons.

Disorderly, threatening behavior in Wal-Mart leads to arrest
An incident of disruptive behavior and disorderly conduct in the Boone Wal-Mart led to the arrest of a Todd man Tuesday.

2008 closes with 100-plus mph wind gusts at Grandfather Mountain
Extremely strong winds with gusts over 100 mph kept Grandfather Mountain closed on New Year's Eve. The mountain reports its weather each day at 8 a.m. and the report for Dec. 31 calculated the highest 3-second gust to be 104.7 mph. From morning on the winds at the summit of the mountain did not subside. Three-second gusts from 80 mph to 100 mph were experienced all day and recorded at the anemometer located at the Mile High Swinging Bridge. One of Watauga County's largest real-estate developments in recent years has been sold after the developer's affiliates filed for bankruptcy last week.

A High Country Bucket List
The Appalachian Women's Fund (AWF) celebrated its one-year anniversary in December, as members and guests reminisced about the busy year with a holiday luncheon and gift drive at the Meadowbrook Inn.

Boone Police reports:
Dec. 23 - Larceny from a motor vehicle was reported at 4:20 p.m. on the 200 block of Watauga Village Drive.


Watauga sheriff's reports:
Dec. 15 - Criminal damage to property by vandalism was reported in a parking lot on the 300 block of Russell Beach Road in Vilas.

Frozen body found in Mitchell County identified

Around 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office received a call from the Carter County, Tenn., Sheriff's Office informing that two hikers had found a body of a man on the Grassy Creek Bald Trail.

Schools will scratch off more lottery money
Watauga County will get a boost in school capital funding through a one-time redistribution of lottery proceeds, but there's no guarantee of a permanent formula change.

Police officer saves man's life with CPR

Boone Police officers responded at 11 a.m. Monday to a report of a man sitting in a car at the High Country Inn parking lot. The first to arrive at the scene, officer Scott Mackler, discovered the male did not have a pulse and was not breathing. Mackler immediately began CPR. A pulse was obtained as a result of the CPR by the time Watauga Medics arrived. Medics transported the man to the Watauga Medical Center. Initial scanner traffic indicated the man was in his 20s. A spokesperson for the Boone Police Department said the man has since been airlifted to another hospital, but did not disclose the location. The identity of the victim has not been released. Police Chief Bill Post believes the man may have been suffering medical distress. He said foul play is not suspected at this time. By Melanie Davis

Suspect in Boone murder arrested in Illinois
The man police suspect in the shooting death of a Boone pawn-shop clerk was apprehended in an Illinois motel room on Christmas morning.

Education foundation offers teacher scholarships

The Watauga Education Foundation is helping local teachers build their resumes and improve their instructional abilities. WEF is accepting applications for the Price-Deverick Scholarships for Professional Development.
