LYNCHBURG, Va. — Taylor Cook won the pole vault in the Liberty Invitational indoor track and field meet held at Liberty University Saturday.
Cook qualified for the North Carolina Indoor State Championships, which will be in February. Her teammate, Laura Gulliver, was sixth in the pole vault.
Jordan Pineda was third in the shot put, and Hannah Barbour was fourth in the 3,200-meter run. Kasey Jones was second in the 55-meter hurdles and 16th in the 55-meter dash. Jones was also seventh in the high jump.
Sydney Cook was eighth in the pole vault and 10th in the high jump. Ian Boyd was eighth place in the pole vault and 11th in the 55-meter hurdles, and Gabby Romano was 20th in the shot put.
Prep swimming
MORGANTON — Watauga’s swimming teams swept Freedom and East Burke during their meet held last Wednesday.
Watauga’s girls finished with 105 points, while Freedom had 88 and East Burke 31. Watauga’s boys won with 131 points, followed by East Burke and Freedom, which each had 46.
In the girls’ meet, Ayumi Tokushige had a huge day, taking home five first-place finishes. She won the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:02.58 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:10.49.
Tokushige added a victory in the 100 freestyle, winning with a time of 1:02.58. She then teamed with Ingrid Forsyth, Crystal Tsang and Hailey Middlebrook to win the 400-meter relay with a time of 4:27.14.
The same group also won the medley relay with a time of 2:14.12.
Middlebrook led a 1-2 finish in the breaststroke, turning in a time of 1:18.22. Aidan Berry was second in the event with a time of 1:28.68.
Forsyth was second in the 100 freestyle and in the 500 freestyle, while Hannah Padgett was third in both events. Forsyth was also second in the 200 freestyle, while Tsang was second and Carrie Winkler third in 200 individual medley. Tsang was also second in the 100 butterfly.
Laiken Williams teamed with Berry, Winkler and Ruth Smith to finish third in the medley relay. Smith was third in the 50 freestyle and Winkler was third in the 100 butterfly.
There were plenty of first-place finishes to go around for the Pioneers. Konrad Kosmala won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05.62, while Alden Mast won the 200 individual medley with a 2:23.87. Kosmala added a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (54.08), while Mast added a victory in the 500 freestyle (5:45.49).
Cameron Owens won the 50 freestyle with a 26.74, while Justin Zumbo was third in the event. Zumbo won the 100 butterfly with a 1:09.34, while William Tsang was second with a 1:10.50.
Zumbo added a victory in the 100 backstroke (1:05.05), while Willis Kennedy was second. Pamornchart Manomayangoon added a victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.81), while Dylan Russell was second.
Watauga’s 400 freestyle relay team of Tsang, Owens, Zumbo and mast took first place as did the Pioneers’ 200 relay team, consisting of Owens, Kennedy, Tsang and Houston Sherer.
Watauga’s medley relay team of Zumbo, Mast, Manomayangoon and Kosmala also captured first place.
Watauga swims again Tuesday at Valdese.
