Armanti Edwards wins Walter Payton Award
Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards gave the Mountaineers a rare trifecta Thursday night when he was awarded the Walter Payton Award, given to the top player in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Commentary: Wildcats still one of the game’s blue bloods
This one has the dynamic of a familiar situation, only involving football. Appalachian State travels to Louisville, Ky. to take on Kentucky, at noon on Sports South, for the first time in the Mountaineers’ history. It’s a chance for Appalachian State to make history, if not nationally, then certainly in its own program.

Pioneers take second game from Avery
Watauga’s first victory over Avery was relatively easy. The Pioneers took a big first-quarter lead and really never looked back.

Watauga makes it four straight
Watauga’s inside duo of Nicole Tesh and Katherine Mayhew proved, for the second time in two days, to be too much for Avery to handle.

ASU women set sights on Furman
It’s all a matter of persecutive as to which was tougher on Appalachian State’s women’s basketball team — their final exams or the 2 1/2 hour practice they went through Wednesday morning.

Around the area: Edwards, LeGree earn AP awards

First-team quarterback Armanti Edwards and defensive back Mark LeGree highlight three Appalachian State representatives on the 2008 Associated Press NCAA Division I FCS All-America teams, the AP announced on Wednesday. Offensive lineman Jonathan Bieschke is a second-team honoree.

ASU trio earns honor

Three Appalachian State players were named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation's FCS All-American team Friday.

ETSU's Big Three too much for ASU

East Tennessee State's "Big Three" was too much for Appalachian State's 13. East Tennessee State got 78 points from three players - Courtney Pigram, Kevin Tiggs and Mike Smith - and buried the Mountaineers 89-70 in front of 2,520 at the Holmes Center Saturday night.
