Some school bus routes to change in January

Some Watauga County schools’ bus routes will be reduced beginning the second week of January due to declining student ridership.

Defendant enters plea agreement in murder trial
The third and final defendant in the murder of Appalachian State University student Stephen Harrington entered into a plea agreement Thursday in front of large courtroom crowd at the Watauga County Courthouse. An estimated 15 people sat on each side of the courtroom, in support of the victim and the defendant, Matthew Brandon Dalrymple.

Armanti Edwards wins Walter Payton Award

Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards gave the Mountaineers a rare trifecta Thursday night when he was awarded the Walter Payton Award, given to the top player in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Crimestoppers: Cars damaged; knives, coins and jewelry stolen
Watauga County Crimestoppers requests the public’s help in identifying the person(s) responsible for the following crime(s): During the evening of Dec. 6, someone damaged multiple vehicles sitting on the side of N.C. 105 south in Boone. In addition, sometime during the day on Tuesday Dec. 16, between 6:40 a.m. and 4 p.m., someone kicked in a door to a residence on Hopewell Church Road and took knives, coins/change and jewelry. Anyone with information on these crimes or any other crime is asked to call Crimestoppers at 828-268-6959. All information will be kept confidential. Crimestoppers pays rewards for information, which leads to arrests; recovery of stolen property; seizure of drugs; and the location of wanted persons.

Hayes Centers announces performance lineup for 2009

The Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock has announced its 2009 winter/spring/summer presenting season, which features a genre-spanning lineup of everything from bluegrass, blues and flamenco to one-man shows, opera and comedy, as well as Hayes Center veterans returning by popular demand and new artists sure to return in the future.

Shop 'til you drop

The event was sponsored by ASU’s Staff Council and involved taking 88 financially disadvantaged schoolchildren shopping, with an emphasis on buying winter clothing. Approximately $15,840 was raised for the children, with 100 percent spent on the youth. The day began at the Broyhill Inn where the volunteers gathered, as well as the children for a breakfast and later a lunch.

Holiday shopping sales mixed locally
With the recession lingering and national retailers expecting a modest holiday shopping season, the local retail scene is similar to last year’s.

Gearing up for the obesity battle
Watauga County is stepping on the scales next year, with a local project helping people slim down and stay in shape.

Wise but freezing
Despite 20-degree temperatures and gusting winds, more than 100 people came out to see Poplar Grove Baptist Church’s nativity scene last Friday evening, including the Three Wise (But Shivering) Men. The cardboard camels reportedly endured the freeze nicely.

Electric foundation awards grants to area non-profits
Five area non-profits received grants from the Blue Ridge Electric Members Foundation last week.

Boone Police reports:
Dec. 6 —Larceny was reported at 5:29 p.m. on the 1800 block of Old U.S. 421. The Food Lion grocery store reported a case of Budweiser and a case of Busch Ice beer stolen.

Amid budget crunch, DOT plans move forward
Though state transportation funds have hit a brick wall, Watauga County had one project funded for next year while a major widening in Boone is still on schedule.

Boone man charged in checking case
A Boone man has been arrested on felony charges related to writing worthless checks.

Dec. 3 — Officers responded to a civil dispute reported on the 300 block of Bub Teems Road in Boone. The dispute concerned estate property.

Boone Police reports:
Dec. 8 — Criminal damage to property by vandalism was reported at 6:45 a.m. on the 100 block of Poplar Hill Drive.

People’s Choice Awards launched
Mountain Times Publications announced the launching of the area’s first People’s Choice Awards.

Sugar Grove day school celebrates retiring its loans
Sugar Grove Developmental Day School (SGDDS) invites everyone in the community who has contributed to the success of the day care to a Christmas party to celebrate retiring its loans.

Appalachian’s winter commencement is Sunday
More than 1,000 students will receive their degrees during commencement Dec. 21 at Appalachian State University.

SAHA seeks money for Horn grounds

The Southern Appalachian Historical Association, which operates Hickory Ridge Homestead and the outdoor drama Horn in the West, is seeking more funding from the town of Boone.

State springs for Boone's water grant
The town of Boone received some state help in developing a new raw-water intake plant. The North Carolina Rural Center has awarded Boone a grant to purchase land for the proposed plant site, which is on the South Fork of the New River.


WHS garners more anti-smoking funds
Watauga High School will have three more years of funding to reduce tobacco use in the community, with a focus on educating minors on the health risks of tobacco.
