Watauga takes on Ashe Monday
Watauga’s varsity football game scheduled for Friday night at Ashe County has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. in West Jefferson. The Watauga soccer games scheduled for Friday night at home against Avery are still to be played with the jayvees starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 6 p.m.
Watauga’s jayvee football game Thursday night with Ashe County was postponed until next Thursday at 7 p.m. because of lightning in the area. Watauga leads Ashe County 8-7 in the second quarter. The game will be played at Jack Groce Stadium.
 

County Library Board meets Tuesday

The Watauga County Library Board has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m. on Aug. 18.

It's the first meeting since Watauga County's library director John Blake said he was forced to resign three weeks ago. The local library board members expressed surprise at the action, since bylaws give them authority over personnel decisions. Blake's resignation is on the agenda for discussion.

The meeting will be held in Room C the N.C. Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove Road in Boone. It is open to the public.

CRIMESTOPPERS: Cement mixer and mortar stolen
Watauga County Crimestoppers requests the public’s help in identifying the person(s) responsible for the following crime: Sometime between Nov. 24 and Dec. 4, a suspect(s) drove onto a construction at the end of Patton Ridge Lane. The suspect(s) then took a cement mixer and five bags of mortar off the site. Anyone with information on this crime or any other crime is asked to call Crimestoppers at 828-268-6959. All information will be kept confidential. Crimestoppers pays rewards for information, which leads to arrests; recovery of stolen property; seizure of drugs; and the location of wanted persons.


Equipment damaged, stolen

Watauga County Crimestoppers requests the public’s help in identifying the person(s) responsible for the following crime(s): Sometime between the dates of Nov. 29 and Dec. 1, a person(s) damaged two peaces of heavy equipment around the 4000 block of Hwy 105 South. In another crime on Wednesday, Nov. 19, a break-in to a residence located in the Foscoe community on N.C. 105 south near the Smoke Tree Lodge was reported. The victim left town for the Thanksgiving holiday on Friday Nov. 21, and when he returned on Tuesday, Dec. 2, someone had taken his yellow 2005 model New Holland skidsteer, valued at $28,000. A skidsteer is like a small bulldozer with four wheels instead of tracks (photo is example).

ROTARY FRUIT SALE: The citrus is coming
The Boone Sunrise Rotary Club announced today that fruit orders from Florida Indian Groves is arriving this week. The fruit was picked and boxed last Saturday and will be delivered to Legends on the Appalachian State campus located at 190 Hardin St., across the street from the Red Onion Cafe. Distribution of the fruit will be Thursday, Dec. 11, and Friday, Dec. 12, from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m,. and Sunday, Dec. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. This is the sixth year that the Boone Sunrise Rotary Club has held its “Great Fruit for a Great Cause” fundraiser in support of local community projects. The club was joined in the sale again by the Interact Club of Watauga High School. More than 800 cases of fruit were ordered through advanced sales. The club will have around 25 extra cases of fruit for sale at the distribution location at Legends. For more information, call Ken Cone at (828) 773-1373.

Nonprofits feeling effects of sluggish economy

As the economy remains at the forefront of national concern, another sector finds itself in dire need without any option of a governmental bailout.

The town of Boone explored a forest of possibilities by gathering public input on its proposed Urban Forest Management Plan.

Jam session heats up for local cause
Local musicians are proving they can for WeCAN. A weekly gathering of traditional, acoustic musicians is raising money for Watauga County Assistance Network, an emergency-assistance program of the Hospitality House of Boone.

Watauga’s basketball teams were swept by Ashe County Tuesday night.

Robbery suspect arrested after fleeing from police

Police arrested a Boone man Wednesday after he alledgedly robbed an Appalachian State student.
A witness told the Boone Police Department a man forced entry into an apartment unit on Hill Street and told the victim, a male student, to go into the bedroom and stay there.

Town officials seek public input on forest plan
The town of Boone has a plan designed to sprout new ideas, leave more trees and grow better design principles for its “urban forest.”

Nov. 19 — Shannon Michael Green, 29, of 518 Hidden Valley Circle, Boone, was served with an order for arrest for failure to appear at a scheduled court date. 

Local fir tree sales brisk despite sluggish economy
Despite national concern among retailers about the financial health of Christmas shoppers, the local holiday season is expected to remain “green,” particularly for those growing and selling Christmas trees.

Boone Christmas parade time changed to 9 a.m.
The annual Boone Christmas Parade rolls through the downtown area on Dec. 6, with a focus on local giving and sharing the warmth of the holiday season as well as a time change.

Boone man injured in motorcycle wreck

A Boone man was injured following a collision last Tuesday in Boone. Michael Domin, 43 was traveling on a 2007 Honda motorcycle southbound on Blowing Rock Road at approximately 6 p.m. in front of Bojangles restaurant.

Teen killed in Monday accident near Blowing Rock
An accident claimed the life of Hickory teen in the early morning hours of Monday, one-tenth of a mile north of Blowing Rock.

Nov. 16 —Shane Vincent Geoffrey, 32, of 462 Jones Drive, Boone, was arrested on view on a charge of assault on a female.

Grant to study ways seventh-graders learn in a virtual world setting
Today’s school students have never known a world without technology. From surfing the ‘Net to playing virtual world simulations, they turn to computers and the Internet for recreational, social and educational activities.
