Farm-City

sprouts Nov. 6
By Scott Nicholson

The annual Farm-City Banquet is bringing the best of town and country together again on Nov. 6.

It’s the 53rd year of the event and this year’s theme is “Bringing Us Together,” emphasizing the positive roles of the urban, rural and university communities working together to preserve and sustain Watauga County’s environment.

Tickets are on sale for the event and can be purchased through the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service office on King Street in Boone. No tickets will be sold at the door, and advance ticket sales are limited to 250 people. They are $12 each.

This year’s event has an environmental and sustainable slant, with locally grown food and zero-waste, recyclable or compostable utensils and dishes. The event will be catered by Tina Pond and the menu features vegetarian and meat lasagna, beef tips, roasted potatoes, fresh green salad, broccoli, apple and raspberry crisp, coffee and tea.

The period for nominations for awards has ended. Awards will be given out in the following categories: volunteerism award for adult and youth; Women in Agriculture award for adult and youth; organizations, service or civic, that have benefited the community award for both adult and youth; town and community councils or groups that have improved the community; individual or business that has made significant contributions to local agriculture; and individual, business, or organization that has made significant contributions to local agri-tourism and socially sustainable agricultural practices.

Call the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service at (828) 264-3061 for more information.
