Watauga blasts overmatched Berry
Even against and outmanned opponent, Jennings Rex turned in a memorable performance against Berry Academy. The crafty senior scored, count ’em, seven goals — in the first half — and led the Pioneers to a 10-1 pasting of the Cardinals in the first round of the state 4-A playoffs on a cold and breezy Wednesday night.
Watauga girls eye chance at championship
Nothing is a sure thing when it comes to athletics. However, Chapel Hill’s girls’ cross country team has been as close to a sure thing that there is when it comes to winning state 4-A championships.
ASU to open on MASN
For the second-straight season, Appalachian State’s home opener will be broadcast across the Eastern seaboard as the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) will visit the Holmes Center when the Mountaineers host Charlotte on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.

ASU runners honored
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Appalachian State women’s cross country standout Meghan Gaffney was named the Southern Conference Runner of the Week for the week of Oct. 20. This is the third time during the 2008 season that Gaffney has earned the honor.

Commentary: Halloween showdown could be a classic
Let the Halloween hype begin. Appalachian State, barring any unforeseen events (an Elon upset of ASU for starters), plays Wofford for the Southern Conference championship Friday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

BANNER ELK — And you thought Appalachian State’s football team was the only national champ in town. Scratch that. They now have competition from their own cycling team, which beat rain, fog, mud, and, incidentally, more than 30 teams from every region of the country to claim the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Division 2 National Championship, hosted by Lees-McRae.

CHARLOTTE — Watauga’s girls’ cross country team captured the state 4-A Western Regional championship Saturday at soggy McAlpine Park by placing three runners in the top 10.

Cougars slip by ASU
Appalachian State volleyball team forgot about Friday night's loss to The Citadel and got down to business quickly on Saturday taking the first two sets from College of Charleston. The Cougars battled back to win the match in five sets, however, 20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15 and 16-14.
